X xterra guy looking for help

Hey all,I am not new to the off road world, but am looking to convert to the jeep political party. I currently "run" and own a xterra, but my last outing out I almost put a bullet it it's brain. I am really looking to get a jeep, but I am still a college kid so don't have a ton of time to get out wheelin', and still need something I can drive back and forth to school and work. I have been looking at a variety of years of wranglers, and a lot of them seem to have pretty low miles. I am a little hesitant to buy because I haven't really done my research. That's where you come in, need a little help understanding what would be considered high miles for a jeep in the 98-02 range. Any other feed back will be gladly welcomed.
Looking forward to getting to know some of you, and thanks ahead for any info you can pass my way.

Ps I recently did a full off body 69' 442 restoration, so I am serious about things i get interested in.

I would look for a 00 model or newer, there were some engine upgrades that year(2000), and a newer trans in the 5spd(nv3350 vs the ax-15, which is fine) Get a 6cly vs the 4cly, auto or stick which ever you like better. Look for one with a rear dana 44 axle, has a metal fill plug in the diff cover, vs the weak dana 35 that has a round plastic fill plug. Front axle is fine. If you plan to do a lot of offroad at some point, consider going up to the 03 model year, you can look at the rubicon model, dana 44's front and rear, lockers, 4:1 t-case. As for miles if taken care of the 4.L will go 200k. The problem usually is the transmission can have issues around 150ish for the auto and closer to 200k for the sticks if they have not been taken care of. Feel free to post over in the TJ tech forum as well.

I totally agree, something in the early 00's is a good bet. Mileage wise you should see stuff between 70 and 100 k I would guess. I have a 2001 tj and I love it!!! Also, carry a small tool box with you... jeeps are "quirky" ;-) but there is nothing like owning one!

Couldnt have said it better myself. And add to that, there are tons of upgrades available for the TJ model (97-06).
