Hey everyone, just purchased a 91 YJ to take with me on a remote assignment to the lovely country of Turkey in April. I'm not new to forum communities, my other baby is a 2010 Aqua Blue camaro and I've met some awesome people and friends on the camaro forums! I'm pretty mechanically inclined and a big fan of DIY, but I'm new to the Jeep world so i'm sure you all have some great advice and threads out on topics I need to know about to fix up my old jeep to make it ready for the international world!
Apart from my military service, I'm also a musician and there is just enough "trunk" space in the jeep to haul all of my equipment! Looking forward to picking up my jeep tomorrow morning, uploading some pics and getting started working on it to have it ready to be shipped off in February to be ready for me in April when I arrive in turkey!
I was in Turkey for work a year ago. I stayed in Eskisehir for ten days doing work for the F-35 project.
License to kill gophers by the government of the United Nations. Man, free to kill gophers at will. To kill, you must know your enemy, and in this case my enemy is a varmint. And a varmint will never quit - ever. They're like the Viet Cong - Varmint Cong. So you have to fall back on superior intelligence and superior firepower. And that's all she wrote.
After driving around town the last couple of days, I have a few things on the immediate to do list.. First, there was a recall in 2001ish for a parking brake assembly that was never done on my jeep so the part has been ordered and the local jeep dealership is going to install it free either on Friday morning or Monday morning. 2nd, I need to adjust the steering gear box to hopefully fix the play in the steering wheel.. I've been told to replace it, but hopefully adjusting it will do the trick and save me $170 ish.
Also going to dump the gas tank and replace all pertinient fluids. Don't know when the last oil change was performed so I will know that I have done it. The jeep fires right up so I don't think I'm going to mess with replacing any spark plugs or anything, but this may be something I do before shipping the car off in February, or maybe in April when I get to Turkey so it's not just sitting for the 2-3 month trip that it takes to transport a vehicle overseas
4 brand new tires and an alignment on Monday morning.. The tires are close to being done, and I don't feel particularly safe driving too long on it. The spare is on the jeep now and it's the wrong size tire completely... Before leaving I will buy a 5th tire to have new working spare that matches the rest. Comes out to about $721 from a friend of mine's tire shop (GoodYear).
After these, I have a clutch issue to sort out. At least my first instinct is it's a worn clutch... While driving in 1st and sometimes 2nd (manual transmission) it will be accelerating fine and then all of a sudden it feels as if I'm in neutral.. The engine revs but the jeep does not continue to accelerate. There's 110,000 miles on the jeep (at least thats what the odometer says...) so if it hasn't ever been replaced before then it's probably that time. Hopefully this fixes the problem and I can move on to making her look pretty
The "pretty" will be sanding down all of the interior/exterior and monstalining everything. The paint now is red so I will stick with red for the exterior, but am undecided on red or black for the interior. My passenger door is currently bunjied closed.. Hopefully it's just the lock mechanism (easy fix). Also the "tailgate" is off a little bit due to some body work issues.. Hopefully I will get to it but it's not really a priority yet
