Fabbing light question

I'm no electrician, as a matter of fact electrical stuff is my weak point, so tell me if I'm wrong here.
I currently have relatively cheap off road lighting on my jeep. They're two 55 watt halogen lights that are about as bright as my headlights. Who's to say that I can't use the bulb sockets of the cheap lights and put a better bulb in there such as an LED or something to make them brighter? Would that work? and if so would that mess with anything?
Maybe someone that's more electrically inclined can drop some knowledge.

Why bother? You can buy 60 W Hella aux lights at commercial truck supply stores for $25 each or so. I used them as back up lights for several year.

I must not know where to look. Where I'm at there's only cheap stuff and $100+ lights. I might just have to order something.

I have not seen any aftermarket LED bulbs that do anything for the driver. There is no illumination whatsoever, but if you're talking about something like DRL's only, LED bulbs aren't a bad choice. They're dazzling bright to look at for oncoming traffic but that's about all they're good for. A friend of mine with a civic replaced his light buckets for one that holds 2 HID projectors and a bulb socketed cornering beam. He's been going through all kinds of the led bulbs for the past 2 yrs or so to find something that actually lights up the side road and nothing so far. He only wants LED to match the color temp of the hid's. If all he wanted was cornering lights, a standard halogen bulb works better.
