good, that will save some time. I rarely even use the high beams so I would probably forget how to turn them on if I had a separate switch mounted somewhere, lol.

How long did it take DDM to ship your order? I guess these things are backordered but it has been almost a week since I ordered and still hasn't been processed.

Mine came within a week or so. They are usually fast at getting them out but sometimes the processing takes forever. Have you called them?

No, been busy, so it hasn't really bothered me too much. I just happened to look at the order status yesterday, so I figured I would ask. If I don't see any change by friday I will call them.

This is interesting. I thought DDM was in california, but the tracking in usps says it is coming from Suzhou China. I passed up a less expensive Japanese HID kit on Ebay because I thought I was buying USA made here.

oh well.

Any possibility of taking a picture low beam against a wall from 30'.

Reason: I'd the focal length of a hid is very different that a reg bulb and I'd like to see the cutoff.

Mod sounds great and very resonable costs..but want to see how the light is controled

Thanks

So does anyone sell a kit to convert the driving lights to HID... Guessing you also need a clear lens if such a thing exist?

I think you'd be hard pressed to find a set of these actually made in the US. DDM has a tech/CS center in California, but the parts ship from China.

Mine have always taken a couple weeks from them....including slow processing time. It's generally been about a week for processing and a week for shipment (of the four kits I've purchased from them).

Yeah, I just like to by USA whenever possible. But yeah, took about a week to get a notification it shipped, and 2 business days later it is now in New York. Maybe it will get to VA by tomorrow.

Don't remember asking yet, but do you recall if the DDM HID's were DOT legal or not? Little late now anyway, but just curious.

I am not sure if it's the bulbs that are your concern, but the housings.

If things get pushed through the way people are trying, retrofit HIDs will all be illegal.

Well I got the parts today. This wiring looks more difficult than I thought it would be, might need some assistance when I start on this project tomorrow.

Hopefully DM has a faq on the site somewhere.

Well, going to start fumbling my way through the install after i load up a playlist on the old ipod. Got some home brew beer (IPA) ready to go. Should be a fun day. Untill i get a ways in and get some pics posted here is DDM's instructions.

H4 H/L HID Install Guide - Help Desk Software powered by DDM Tuning

Kind of generic using a toyota.

But when I get some shots, anything not already covered by OP, or to make DDM's instructions relevant to a TJ, I will post soon. Specifically, I was going to try to get some shots of mounting options for the ballasts and such. Also I got the BOW eliminators, which were probably unnecessary in anything made before the JK, but I didn't want to wait another 2 weeks to get the parts if it turned out i do need them.

So just to clarify, my install is on a 2002 TJ X. 55w, hi/low kit. Don't remember which bulbs i ordered, i think 6000k. I wil look that up.

Anyways, be back in a little while. Wish me luck so i dont screw it up

well I got the headlights and bulbs in as per TXST8TJ's directions.

Only thing I have to add to that part, for dummy's like me, when you slide the bulb in the rubber boot do it from the wiring side first. I tried to shove it through bulb first. You may be able to make it work this way but I gave up and tried the other way. Works just fine after you carve out the boot a bit to make a hole. Nice snug fit as OP stated.

A utility knife (razor blade) works wonders for carving out that plastic boot so you can insert the bulb and wiring.

One thing I need to add though. Maybe I got a later model bulb, or maybe it is because I am using the hi/lo kit. But the chrome shield on my bulb looks completely different than OP's pics. only goes up the sides and doesn't wrap around the front of the bulb. I will post pics of it later.

okay, ran into a snag. Where do you guys put the ground wire on the wiring harness? step 14/15 in the install guide.

I see where the body ground is, but putting it there the connection to ballast harness passenger side won't reach.

also there is another ground wire off the harness all the way over on the driver side, where the heck does that one go?

Nevermind, i figured it out. there is a ground wire off each side of the harness. I just tied into where the stock headlights were grounded. no problems.

So everything works. Now to figure out how to secure everything.

I can't catch a break today. Had to go meet the wife for lunch before I got a chance to secure all the wiring. So I had to pull the harness back out.

Finally got back home, and it's going to rain soon and I can't find my zip tie's. There is a giant tube full of them hidden somewhere in the recesses of my garage. or maybe house somewhere. Who knows

Finally found the zip tie's. Only spot I could find to run the main harness wire to driver side was across the top in front of the radiator.

Whatever the little box is on the harness, where the red power wire connects to, found a spot between the air box and fuse box to tuck it in for now. I am going to end up re running the power wire and tucking it under that tube. Just gotta go find some double sided tape to secure it. Autozone maybe?

And last thing I have for now. The bulb is different than the one in OP's post. Maybe it is a different model or something but it doesn't have that huge black piece on the back, and the heat shield only covers some of the side, not the front. Also I got the hi/lo kit, I thought they both used the same bulb but maybe not.

Anyway, when feeding this one through the rubber boot I was able to feed the connectors through first and push it through that way. Still had to cut a ring around the top of the boot to make a hole, but cutting slits in the side wasn't necessary on mine.

I am guessing he had to feed his in bulb first because of that big black piece on the bulb?

Any suggestions on better places to mount the parts would be appreciated. I just zip tied the ballasts where I could find a spot temporarily till I can get the tape, but am thinking of taping one to the washer fluid res, and the other to the airbox. Best places I can see at the moment. They came with some mounting brackets, but I can't see an area big enough to bolt them down anywhere.

I have to go aim the lights later anyway so I will post some shots of the lights later.

Some light shots, for comparison mine are the 6000k 55w.

So just for reference, the house is roughly 30 feet from the driveway. And headlight shots were standing on porch so those are roughly 30 feet too.

Maybe my stocks were just that bad, but the new ones are an amazing difference, you couldn't even see the house in the before shots.

When I get my jeep back I will take some shots of my wiring and setup. That is if no one else chimes in before me.

thanks, In the meantime I will poke around and see if I can't find a better location. The spots I found work but they won't be laying flat, more of a vertical position so vibrations might be able to shake em loose eventually.

So i read the quadratec article on how to aim the headlights and I don't have a suitable area available at the moment to do this. I have a garage to shine them on, but I only have enough flat surface to back about 5 feet away from it. Crappy driveway design.

I know my lights are aimed too high because I keep getting flashed driving to work this morning. Funny thing is (sarcasm) the sun was already coming up and I am still bilnding people with the low beams. I personally hate staring into bright ass lights while driving, so I want to aim them down so I am not doing it to others. Also don't want to draw undue attention from police, these things are a lot brighter than I expected them to be.

which adjustment screws should I turn and what direction to make the things aim down for now till I can find a better space to adjust them in. Just a basic adjustment to get them out of other drivers faces is all I want for now, I can adjust the horizontal and level them out later.

So this is interesting. Is it possible to accidentally install the DDM kit so that the polarity of the bulb gets reversed?

It is almost if the high beam is on, on one side. And the low beam is on, on the other. I got them leveled out with low beam switch on the jeep. But when I switch to hi beam driver side beam goes up, and passenger side goes down.

Also before i started adjusting them in the first place. driver side was aimed fairly straight vertically, while passenger side was way up in the air.

Now after adjusting the passenger side down to level, you can see the housing is tilted way down while the driver side still sits pretty flush.

would it make a difference if i flipped the harness around and plugged into the harness on the driver side? I can always extend the hotwire back to the battery if this is the case.

Also I didn't see any identifying marks, do the ballasts have to go on a particular side? They look identical to me.
