Hella E-Codes and DDM Tuning HIDs - installed

So after about a year of having the HID kit, I finally got around to installing them.

For the HIDs, I went with the DDM Tuning HID kit in the 55w, 5000K flavor. I also opted for the additional wiring harness. I prefer no more than 5000k because anything higher and they get too blue.
I ran DDM Tuning HIDs in my Suburban and they were great from the start.

For the housings, I went with the Hella E-Codes. I had been reading that they were one of the best options for HIDs....other than projector housings of course.


HID kit



An issue some people have had with the housings is with the rubber cover that goes on the back. I have seen some people not use them, and I have seen some people hack the rubber up to fit it around the bulbs.
I like the idea around the rubber cover, so I wanted to make them work.

Operation table...




The basic idea is that you need to trim some of the rubber back and cut some small slits to allow the larger bulb housing to slip through the smaller hole of the rubber cover.





Now that the rubber cover is prepared, turn to the bulb and remove the two screws holding the ring on.




Slide the bulb shield and the ring off.....DO NOT touch the bulbs with your bare fingers.




The bulb housing can now be slipped through the rubber cover. It will still be a tight fit, but that's the point.




Reattach the shield and ring.




Drop the bulbs onto the housings.




Flop the rubber cover over the back of the housing.




Install housings in the Jeep.....wire everything up.
I painted the rings black while they were out. I also touched up the outer bezels.





Be sure to properly aim them before putting the outer bezels back on. I used the aiming tips from Quadratec.

I love my DDM lights, I got the 55w 6k. But after looking through your write up I think I forgot to put my heat shield back on, been about a year since I put them in... whoops.

Looks good though! And nice writeup.

When you say 'heat shield', are you referring to the metal shield around the bulbs?
I was actually wondering if there was any benefit to removing them since there is a shield inside the Hella housing.

Yeah the cone shape heat shield that comes on the HID. I took it off because 1- I thought it was to protect the bulb while being shipped because my YJ HIDs came in a container unlike DDM and 2 I thought since that the E-Codes already had heat shield it was a protect. But so far nothing has melted and the HIDs are still running like the day I bought them.

Is it just the DDM bulbs that have the fit problem, or do you have to trim that black piece for any H4 bulb?

I have pretty much decided on the Hella housings, but don't know which bulb to get yet.

Also do you have the part number so I am sure I get the right lights? I found these on hella's website but want to make sure I order the right thing.

The Hella vision plus are the wrong ones. I'm on my phone right now but when i get home i can get you the part number. The plus are the DOT approved ones and you want the euro-spec ones.

If they aren't DOT approved, will they still pass inspection?

Do you live in a state where they actually check the headlights? I live in CA and don't have inspections so I don't know for sure on the different inspection process.

Would you recommend the retaining ring they are pushing, or do I even need that?

Are you talking about that "Our Experts Recommend"? That's for a CJ and no you shouldn't buy it, you can use the one that is on your existing lights. It's a standard thing. But when you do put that ring around the housings be sure to be gentle, the housing is glass and it will crack if you press it too hard or tighten too hard. Had that happen to me the first time.

Yeah that's what I was talking about and thanks. My old Fairlane has lenses that look about like these, Might be the same 7" design, except the Fairlane had 4. Maybe I can put an H4 upgrade on that thing too next time I go home on leave.

What year Fairlane? (sorry to hijack the thread) I've got a 63 and I'm only using the two outside lights like on the thunderbolts. I've got the conversion housings and just waiting on the HIDs. Since they use h4 you can get the bi-xenon so you have high and low beam in one light. Btw my 63 has the 5" round lights not the 7" so make sure you check yours before ordering extra lenses.

69, it's the side by side lights. If I remember right, 2 are lit for low beam, highs add the other 2. You may be right about the 5" lights though, I haven't seen the thing in about a year and don't see it very often anymore. It's in TX at my parents house, I'm stuck in VA.

Oh well, either way same concept, different size lenses .

I am probably ordering the Hella's for the TJ this weekend. Still gotta figure out what bulbs to get though. I figure I can just keep the stockers in the garage and put em back in for inspections once a year if VA is a pain about the headlights.

Screw DOT, I want some dang light when I am driving at night, as long as I am not aiming them high enough to be in other drivers faces I don't feel bad about it at all.

Yeah thats the way to go about the inspections just swap them out. But euro ecodes have a nice cut-off and keeps the glare to a minimum. So aiming them is really easy and not that must adjustment needed.

So I looked up the DDM lights hopefully right ones this time.

DDM Tuning 35W and 55W HID Kits

And had a few questions, because there are a lot of options.

Keep in mind I would like to run as compatible with stock electrical as possible so I don't have to run extra ballast and all that fun stuff. I want this as plug and play as possible because I suck with electrical.

1. 35 or 55w?

2. Bulb type. Low beam or low/hi? I would think low/hi but you never know.

3. Do I need these 3 things and what do they do for me?
A. HID Harness
B. Error Eliminator
C. Adapter cable

And Finally, I know OP wrote this up for the DDM bulbs specifically, but are there any other good bulb options out there that are reasonably priced? I keep finding all these brands that are like $70 and I don't know if that is each or per pair. either way it is expensive. Just to clarify I am not asking for cheap, I am asking for reasonable, I don't want the bulb to melt or something a month down the road.

Don't know what happen with my last post but, the 55w are a whole lot brighter but it washes out the color, so instead of getting 5000k bulb get a 6-8000k bulb.

I have the 55w 8000k low bulbs and I like them, super white with a small blue hint. I don't have upgraded wires or anything and they are doing fine. The harness and error eliminators you won't need. I got the low beam ones cause they are bright enough and if I need more light I have my LED bars. Also with the Hi beam bulbs they come with a little switch where you'll have to setup on your dash and switch it to go to Hi beams. Equals more wiring.

So with just the low beam bulb, nothing happens when you switch to high beams? And if I decide on the lo/highs, anyone know a useful spot to put the switch within reach?

And are the adapter cables necessary? I thought H4 bulbs were supposed to be compatible with the stock wiring plug.

First off sorry to the TXST8tj, for getting your post hijacked.

But nothing happens when you pull back the lever on lights, sometimes they turn off. If I would to get the high beams I would just put the switch on the panel that covers the bottom half below the steering wheel, either right behind the lever or right next to the puller where you turn the lights on.

For the adapter cables, you do not need them.

This is from DDM website and they have a list of cars that they've installed HIDS into and ran into problems or no problems.

If I am reading it right, all the problems noted with wranglers are on 07+ models (JK's) so my 2002 TJ shouldn't have an issue. After looking around I found other options but I think I am just going to order these.

I even found some LED bulbs that they claim are for headlights, but the design looks like it is impossible for it to put out enough light. If they make them for turn signal bulbs I might try them out.

I would suggest the 55w, 5000k, hi/lo bulbs, with hi/lo harness.

Anything above 5000k and the light is more blue than white.
I installed the 55w, 6000k kit from DDM on my buddy's TJ and side-by-side, his look like smurf lights compared to mine.

You don't need the error elim kit...just not needed for a TJ. I have the optional harness with mine. I don't know if it's needed, but it certainly takes out any question.

Yeah they make those LED headlight bulbs. I've never seen them in person or on any other jeep. So I don't know how well those are. But if you want to get LED lights check out LED Lights, Bulbs & Accessories - SUPER BRIGHT LEDS This is where a lot of people get LEDs for their dash and that is where I got mine. They have turn signal ones too.

I ended up ordering the 55w 6000k's w hi/lo.

I was going off their color chart and the 6000k on a 35w looked blue, but it was white on the 55w.

Oh well if it's too blue, they will burn out one day and I will just order the 5000k's next time.

here's the LED's if anybody cares, LUMEN® - H4 LED Bulbs

I just don't see how they would put out enough light for headlight applications but who knows. I read up on the company and apparently Lumen started out making those bright lights for skyscrapers and such to warn airplanes of a structures height so they don't hit it. I am no expert but I would guess those things have to put out some crazy lumens to see them from so far away.

Unfortunately, maybe I am just blind, but I saw no reference to what wattage they are, or bulb temp, or even how many lumens they are rated at on the website (coincidentally the only website I have found this brand on so far). That in itself sounds a bit shady. So like i said, I just ordered the HID kit instead.

Oh yeah, I probably won't get them in the mail for at least a week, but where and how did you guys mount the ballast's and such? Am I going to need to drill holes for this?

I will take a few pics of the mounting, and pics of where I end up mounting the hi beam switch to add to the post.

I used automotive double stick tape from my shop and just placed them on wheel welds out of the way and away from major heat. You can drill holes for the ballast but they also have a resistor on the line that has no hole to screw it down so it has to be taped.

.....you don't need to wire a separate hi-beam switch. They work exactly like the factory lights.
