It doesn't make LEDs brighter; it will make halogens brighter though, like in the SMS Hella H4 or 90mm kits or Dan Stern's Cibie kit.

The SMS harness is straight forward, the hiding of the wires was my challenge. I tapped into the SMS high beam to run my aux lighting.

I'd like to see a side-by-side comparison on this.
edit: I missed HD's post.

Yeah, LEDs are pretty-much either on or off. These aren't a product that you could use with a dimmer switch.

There are LEDs that are though. I use them in my home theater and they kick butt. I even have the dimmer on a remote control...

Ok, pulled the trigger and ordered the harness with Ray. 172.44 (total with shipping) ACK! But he was super nice and explained how to install it and with you guys photos I think I should be able to tackle this when they arrive. My dealership wanted 150$ to install them.

So, if I wanted the trucklite leds, and set of drivinglight style leds, and one more small led bar, what would I be best of purchasing to run/control all of this? The SPOD or would I need just one of these harnesses?

Are you done yet?

Seems you would want to be able to control the Trucklites with the factory headlight switch.

I always have a lack of funds for Jeep mods. LOL
I meant were you done installing the harness and upgrading your headlights? What are you waiting for?

Smell that? That's daylight burning.

Since you'd want a harness anyhow to run the LED headlights, why not spend the small extra to add dongles to it to trigger the relays for the other lighting and use inexpensive switches?

I mean, an SPOD is cool and all, but you certainly don't "need" one. It's probably the nicest and cleanest way to do things ---- and I admit that I rarely do things nice and clean...
I'm more of a mad scientist type and like to get things to prototype stage and move on.

Hahaha, thats true HillDweller, but reading your informative write ups and other members input is what gave me the balls to try to do the install myself. Now I am waiting for the harness to arrive from Ray (who said that YOU *HillDweller* knows your stuff) and I will be taking that on.. I appreciate this forum for all the data in it for newbies like me

I really like mine. I will probably pay the jeep dealer to aim them correctly when I get the harness installed.

Are you going Sans Harness? You probably will have the same flicker I did. Its not terrible, but noticeable at idol and with the brights on. The Rally Harness from Ray is 161$

At $161 I'm going to see how things go. I'm expecting the flicker and as long as that's not causing harm to the LED, I will wait till I decide on floods and long range lights then have one made that will provide power for all with the brights on. At least that's my thinking right now...

Yup. It was hilldwellers detailed explanations that helped shed light (pun intended) on headlight upgrades and to stay away from the junk like Silverstars. Daniel Stern had good things to say about hilldweller too.

I installed Truck Lites today. They are awesome. I have the flicker but I am waiting patiently for the "magic dongle" (sounds ridiculous). :-)

Now my real question.....
I installed some LED fog light bulbs from Rebel Offroad today. With the ignition on, they emit a faint glow even when I don't have the fog light or any light turned on. When I turn the ignition off, they still emit a faint glow for about 45 seconds, then turn off. If I open a door (no ignition) and the interior light comes on, they also start to glow.

Why does it do this? Is this safe or am I going to burn something out?

Here's the link... I thought the bulbs were a cheaper alternative to some non-legal fog light. Wish truck lite made a matching fog light.

I think the TruckLites are sweet and awaiting the magic rally as well. Did you order yours from Ray?

Nope. I am waiting on the dongle Hilldweller previously mentioned. An improved dongle from truck lite that eliminates flicker w/out a full harness... whatever the F that means... LOL.

Any insight on the behavior of my fog light bulbs?

I have no knowledgeable insight on the behavior of your fogs. My scientific wild ass guess (swag) is it has something to do with the electronics in the TIPM.

Thanks. That makes sense. If LEDs are able to run on such a low draw of power, maybe the slightest current in the line can power them as opposed to a traditional bulb that needs more power to illuminate. That is my "SWAG"!

Thanks again!

No problem. Maybe Stans1stjeep or hilldweller knows for sure.
Any timeline on when trucklite will release their dongle?

It's hard to say from a chair in my home office...

Could it be that the bulb has a capacitor wired in it from the factory?
That reflector was never intended to run an LED so this "bulb" isn't kosher; the only way to know what's going on would be to put it on a bench and run tests or get the manufacturer to tell you what they stuck in there.
I don't think the Jeep's electronics are doing it unless there's something funky going on.

If you really insist on using this thing, I think you should harness and relay it. That way you know for sure when it's off and you've isolated it from the tipm/canbus.
Sticking things like LED or HID light sources into any computer controlled system without isolating it can have interesting side effects. I saw a Lexus with electronic power steering that would turn right/left/right/left violently on its own from the interference from an HID "kit".

I had noticed the same that when I had changed out the stock bulbs with LED bulbs.
Now that I have upgraded to the Vision X LED fog light replacements, I'm not sure what is going on there.
I really like the Vision X fog lights and urge everyone to check them out.
100% get them and they go great with my Truck-Lite LED headlights.

Thanks for weighing in... I almost immediately pulled them out yesterday right after installation. I will look into other options. Thanks!

I was researching those at one point. I read some threads where people say they don't like them but I don't know why. Easy install?

H4 Light Upgrade Kit Rocks!

Completed Susquehanna Motorsports H4 Hella upgrade kit this weekend. Couple of loose cable crimps and replaced the fuse link with a $6 water resistant one from Advanced Auto Parts. Would be real nice if they provided a more water resistant H4 connector but used Permatex High Temp Gasket to improve. The improvement in illumination is unbelievable! Thanks Hilldweller. Would like to ride with you in North Georgia sometime.

Driving Light Upgrade Answer Needed

I just have a simple question. Help a fairly newbie out here please.

Too much information on these lighting upgrades has my head hurting.

95% of my driving is at night. Last night I almost wiped out (or them me) four deer. I have got to get better lights!

I upgraded the bulbs, but that helped minimally.

I want to add the following:

Quadratec Exclusive JK-LMB - Auxiliary Light Mount Brackets for 07-12 Jeep® Wrangler & Wrangler Unlimited JK - Quadratec

WARN 82420 - WARN 6.5" Wireless Driving Lamp Kit - Quadratec

Will these help? Is this all I need?

Thanks!

I did the same thing, but used different aux lamps because I wanted to wire my lamps to come on with the high beams. They work very well as a country road daily driver, finding deer at night.

I have the brackets, easy to install, work well. The instructions that came with mine warned about a brake line that must have been re-routed for 2012, because it wasn't there. Also you will have to move the ambient temp sensor on the left side, no problem, re-mount it to the upper, outboard bracket mounting bolt on the inside of the cross-brace and behind the inboard part of the mounting bracket. I can't tell you anything about the Warn lights, don't have them, several posters have commented that it's easy to forget they are on & have drained their battery &/or melted their light covers. Wiring the other mfg light sets with a hard wire interior switch is easy to do, if you are looking at the wireless remote as a problem solver.

Likely, you will have to add a 20 amp fuse to the power lead at the battery.

If you use a hard wire interior switch system, add a 3 amp fuse to the relay/switch lead at the battery. This will allow you to turn the aux lights on and off completely independently of the the jeep electrical system.

Wiring the lights to work with the high beams is possible, but requires adding two diodes and a capacitor to your lamp wiring. I don't know what your comfort level is in doing this kind of work. It may be easier to order lamps and wiring from SMS with everything already included.
