2 small problems

Hello all - Just got my first Wrangler and here I am bothering everyone already
1) My rear door/tailgate wont open even though the key will turn the lock inside (you can hear and feel it) I assumes it's mechanical and I need to take off that black plastic cover and repair it from inside there? Any hints?
2) The Jeep came with front fog lights controlled by pushing in on the turn signal switch. Problem is, it stays on all the time (unless I can push it in just right). So I cut the wires. Any easy fix for this without taking apart the steering column? Or put a switch somewhere else on the line between the turn switch and the light?
Thanks in advance!

it would help to know the year of your jeep. i know the tj has the fog light switch like you're describing but i'm not sure the other years. i found this earlier today and if you have a tj it should help.

Did you try pulling up and away on the tailgate?

Sometimes the mechanics inside get rusted and messed up and it needs a good tug.
