2003 Certified POS

I bought a 2003 Sahara w/34,000 miles in 08/06 w/warranty - supposedly it's "Certified Preowned." I brought it in last week for a rattling sound i suspect was a loose vent hose.. they discovered the rotors and front pads needed to be replaced (which is not under warranty).. shouldn't a certified pre-owned vehicle have good brakes? I've put less than 5,000 miles on it in the last 6 months.. how much are new brakes & rotors? I've done drums and disc brakes in the past.. if they try to charge me i'm going to fix it myself..

Well that sucks.... brake job for the front.. I would think for new pads and rotors under 150 bucks, depending who and what type you get.

TJ brakes are notorious for being like that. Vanco has a brake upgrade for the front that stops the warping, replaces the knuckle, and provides great stopping power. Along with that, their hydroboost system is pretty sweet.

I'd love to do both of those at some point.

My TJ brakes are 75K miles old, never a problem with them.

Rotors only warp if you ride the brakes for long distances, like highway off-ramps. THey heat up so much that they distort and when they cool down they are warped. Its only happened once on my mom's XJ, but thats because she is a lead foot. If so, I'd look at a set of Baer upgraded rotors that are slotted and drilled. Makes a big difference in stopping without upgrading everything else... and go for a slightly better pad. Semi-metalics are the standard, but some of the newer carbon-metalics are nice and don't chew the rotors as much. But it all really depends on your driving habits.

Mine haven't had an issue either and I'm at 108k - lotsa pad left, but I suspect they were replaced once prior to me buying it at 82k.

Can get brakes and pads, drums and shoes at jcw.com for pretty fair price. Try autozone and checkers if applicable.

I just got off the phone with the morons over at Warnock Jeep in East Hanover, NJ..

They say there were 6mil. left on the pads when they were deemed "certified"....

Does anyone know how much should be left on the pads in order to be deemed "certified"?

do your brakes pull or shake???? how does your fluid look?
odds are they want money and your brakes are fine.

your rear brakes are most likley perfectly fine with your miles on them. your fronts maaay need to be replaced but just the pads.

They've been squeaking since I picked it up in Aug.. it's worse when they're wet.. slowing down on off-ramps, it pulls ever so slightly to the right. No shaking though.. I haven't noticed this since I took it in 3 weeks ago.. they also "tightened the swaybar" which may have impacted this also.. I'll take a look at the fluid later.. the dealership mechanic said the rotors were flaking and needed to be replaced..

My favorite saying....

"I can shit in a box and guaranty it, but all you'll have is a guarantied piece of shit"
