I bought a 2003 Sahara w/34,000 miles in 08/06 w/warranty - supposedly it's "Certified Preowned." I brought it in last week for a rattling sound i suspect was a loose vent hose.. they discovered the rotors and front pads needed to be replaced (which is not under warranty).. shouldn't a certified pre-owned vehicle have good brakes? I've put less than 5,000 miles on it in the last 6 months.. how much are new brakes & rotors? I've done drums and disc brakes in the past.. if they try to charge me i'm going to fix it myself..
TJ brakes are notorious for being like that. Vanco has a brake upgrade for the front that stops the warping, replaces the knuckle, and provides great stopping power. Along with that, their hydroboost system is pretty sweet.
Rotors only warp if you ride the brakes for long distances, like highway off-ramps. THey heat up so much that they distort and when they cool down they are warped. Its only happened once on my mom's XJ, but thats because she is a lead foot. If so, I'd look at a set of Baer upgraded rotors that are slotted and drilled. Makes a big difference in stopping without upgrading everything else... and go for a slightly better pad. Semi-metalics are the standard, but some of the newer carbon-metalics are nice and don't chew the rotors as much. But it all really depends on your driving habits.
They've been squeaking since I picked it up in Aug.. it's worse when they're wet.. slowing down on off-ramps, it pulls ever so slightly to the right. No shaking though.. I haven't noticed this since I took it in 3 weeks ago.. they also "tightened the swaybar" which may have impacted this also.. I'll take a look at the fluid later.. the dealership mechanic said the rotors were flaking and needed to be replaced..
