2005 tj 2.4l swap to 97 cherokee sport 4.0

hey guys... I got a question on this.. I have read about a few of the swaps done and I understand that its best if you can do it from the same year range but the cherokee I got for a hell of a deal. Im in no hurry to do this but im just looking at it and going to start preparing..

Okay details. The tj is a 2005 with the 2.4L with a 6 speed tranny. The cherokee is a 97 with the 4.0 and a 5 speed tranny. ( I paid $200 for the cherokee) I know that I will need to move the motor mounts around and such. Whhatt I am wondering is 2 things as of now. 1. Do I need to do a tranny and Tcase swap or can I use the one from the wrangler? I like the 6 speed better so if I can keep it, That would be best. 2. The ECU. What all entails on getting the one from the 97 to work on the TJ?
Once it comes time to do this, Ill be trying to do a full write up so everyone has it documented. Thanks in advance for any help.

Or would I be better off doing a little work to the cherokee and selling it to buy a neon turbo and shit and go turbo'd?

I'll give you $201 for the XJ! . A Neon, really? What are you committing to building, TJ or a street car?
I wouldn't put a drivetrain from a 97 in a 05, but that's just me. Okay, I'll give you $205, my final offer...

Okay not a neon but srt4 turbo set up. Why wouldn't you put a 97 motor in? Just trying to form up a good thread on it

Well a swap from a four banger to a 4.0 is not worth it, really. A V8 swap is the best option IMO, and from what I've read, neither are cheap to do, that's why the preferred engine swap will always point towards a V8. Actually a Viper V10 will fit in the engine bay, seriously! But that's a major job. I don't know about the compatibility of the Neons engine compared to the TJs, a turbo would be nice and much less work than a swap, and much much cheaper IF it would work. $210 for the XJ, final offer...

Most states require you to run a same year engine or newer when doing a engine swap. Something to do with emissions I think. I'd recomend looking into your states laws in regards to that.

That I did not know. I'll look into that one. I'm in Texas so well see. I'll probably just end up going for the srt4 turbo from the neon or pt cruiser. I don't want a v8 in it right now. I still want the funcionality. I thought about trying the Chevy 4.3L and experiment with that. My uncle has done a few into Chevy luvs and its a badass little motor.

And Phil. If I just flip it, its gonna go for 1500. Doesn't need too much and is in pretty good shape. Just need tires, brake line, clutch and she would be real dependable
