2012 jeep wrangler sport rear hinge issue

I have a new Jeep with less than 3,000 miles on it. It has not been taken off road or even had the doors removed yet. I have owned it for less than 6 months.
The back tailgate hinge has now broken four times. The dealership has repaired the hinge but keeps saying they have not seen this before. I put a formal complaint in with Jeep and the service rep. says they have not had problems with this issue. It has a heavy spare tire that came with the vehicle. The hinge can not hold the weight of the hatchback and tire. I live in a flat area. The dealership said the next time it breaks it is at my expense. How can that be?

Any suggestions? Anyone have similar issues? Thanks in advance.

I have had my 2013 Wrangler for 6 months also and have not had any problems with the tail gate hinges. Your new Jeep is under warranty for 3 years or 36,000 miles. You should not have to pay for any repairs while it is under warranty. If your hinges break again your Jeep may fall in to the lemon law.

What size tire? Oversize may void the warranty. And how exactly is the hinge breaking?

the rear hinge is only rated to carry the stock spare. it even says in the manual that anything over 50 lbs will be over the weight limit.

As long as you have the factory spare tire on it, it's covered under warranty. If the dealer tries to make you pay for it you should start the process to get them to take it back under the lemon laws and find a better dealer to get a new one from.

the rubicon stock tire and wheel are about 80 lbs so not sure how they can limit it to 50lbs. Even the stock steelie 16" and stock wheel are over 50lbs.

The OP does not indicate if she actually bought the vehicle new or if aftermarket tires/wheels were added. If so I agree with the posters that say if not factory then she could be in for a fight if he combo weighs more then a rubicon set up..

Thank you all for your comments. I really appreciate it.

The Jeep was purchased new and had the back tire on it. I did nothing to alter what was on the car when purchased. The car came with larger size tires than usual.

I did check into the lemon law and was told by the Attorney General's office that in my state it would quality for number of times I have had the same issue but since it is not a major defect, it probably would not. So I pay $27,000 plus and have a car with some type of defect and it does not qualify for Lemon Law? Guess I know what the next step is .....unfortunately.

The hinge is on the interior of the vehicle below the "strap" type hinge. It pulls out of place and comes out of the bracket (breaks) when the rear tailgate door is say 3/4 or more open. Oh, another thing, the service man said to be more careful when I open the tailgate. What???????? This is a rugged, off road vehicle not a delicate piece of fine china. The back two black tailgate hinge exterior covers break, too.

Please share any thoughts. Again, thanks.

There is another person on this board who IN THE PAST helped dealers lightly Mod new Jeeps to be sold. He has said he stopped doing this because the dealer usually didn't want to do it "right". Their goal was to move the Jeeps out the door, and "issues" became the problem of the person who bought the Jeep.

While I understand your frustration, the easiest fix maybe to get an aftermarket swing out sare tire carrier made for heavier tires.

They are not very hard to install, in fact I am sure most people of "average" mechanical skill could do so. Basic hand tools would be required.

The cost can be from a few hundred to close to a thousand depending on what you choose. Probably not what you want to hear but, IMO easier than trying to keep fighting with the dealer.....unless you are willing to to TRY and get them to go back to stock tires and wheels and refund the difference for your "upgraded" ones.

Good Luck!!

Hi Everyone,

I wasn't sure how to start a new thread but I just have a question. I'm possibly buying a 2012 Sport S with only the soft top. I'm just curious if ALL are built for both tops? So if I wanted to buy a hard top down the line is that compatible? Forgive my ignorance.

Thanks!

Is this what broke on yours? Mine broke abt 4 weeks ago and I have an appt to get it fixed Monday under warranty. You could try calling IAMJEEP and filing a complaint to see if it gets paid for that way. I think the changed something in the manufacture of this part since '11 because it never broke in my 2011 Wrangler.

I have a 2013 and mine has broken 3 times also, I'm trying to find a aftermarket strap because the factory method is obviously a defect. Who buys a jeep and keeps the whimpy factory wheels & tires?
