36 inch tires

Am I crazy to run 36 inch tires on my dana 44's? Also, is there a reason most people seem to rum either 35's or 37's?

Are they stock Rubi Dana 44's? If so 36's maybe be a bit of a stretch on those axles.

"rum" do you mean rub?

Yes. They are unoriginal. Many just go with popular opinion. Kudos for getting outside of the box! However, you might not want to go that large. You probably would need Dana 60s for those tires.

you could upgrade yours.
later on when I lift mine up more to fit 36's I plan to just get super kit's(with ox's) for both my axles.

do you have d44's front and rear or just rear?

Dana 60's hang too low for 36's you'll scrape it on everything.

Depends on what kind of 60. If you go with older 60's from a full size truck size then yes. If you go with some of the aftemarket one's, then there may be more clearance than a dana 44.

also to run 36 or 37's with 44's just upgrade the 44 to the 33 spline shafts in the rear and upgrade the front with better shafts and u-joints and use a selectable locker in both and you should be fine for a while.

All of which are great ideas but if you have rubi 44's front and rear you should sell them. They bring a hefty price. I've seen them go for as much as 5000 dollars. That's a long ways into some beefier axles that will take punishment all day long.

I've seen stupid deals on axles. My buddy sold his 44/30/4.88/ARB axles for 5 grand. It is all about being patient

Dang! That's more than I paid for my jeep!!! Talk about being patient... look for one that's already done. You rarely get what you put in it for what it will sell for. If I wanted a v8 or 60's or whatever, I would shop around for one that someone else put the money into. You'll come out better in the end.

Gross. I don't want to wheel someone else's rig. That's worse than cheating on your wife.

I can get a full width BB 9 inch with disc for almost nothing from a friend. How much money am I looking at to narrow it and put gears in compared to upgraded my 44 axels. Actually the gears and locker will be a wash because the 44 and the 9 would both need them.

That wouldn't be a bad project, but it will run you to narrow it and put the TJ brackets on and such. Then you have the gearing issue you mentioned.

If you were runnina Dana 30/Dana 44 combo and want to run 36's then the best thing you can do is to upgrade your axle shafts. Alloy USA has great deals on Chromo upgrade shafts for both axles. I think the front will run you about 500 and the rear about 300 or less (memory fades). Keep your stock shafts for spares and wheel it. A 36 isn't that much bigger at all than a 35. The setup I talk about keeps a lot of guy out here with 37's from breaking a lot of axles.

And Clifford is right you can get a ton of grip for your Rubicon axles. But just remember you gotta put something back in there and for a well built front axle you can spend easily 3 to 5 grand just to start.

what kind of money am I looking at to narrow the 9 inch. The only thing about the 9 inch is it would be able to handle anything I wanted in the future.....but money is a factor now.

I don't need to. I look at my own wife. She wheels her own rig too.
