4-banger power? truth about simple mods

hi,

someone selling his 4-banger says that he put in a k&n cold air (filter?) and flomaster which means it keeps up with a 6 cyl and has just as much power. could they really make that much difference?

seems to me that they'd improve its performance but not by that much. but what do i know. that's why i'm asking.

thanks much.

No, just no. Thers no way you could put an intake and an exhaust on it and turn it into a 6 cycl... he's an idiot or hes REALLY trying to sell it.

I'm not hating on the 4cy. I have one myself with an intake and the only thing you will notice different is the sound such minimal power gain if any at all.

haha power gain you mean power loss lol. Jeeps I have seen on the net actually lost power from making them breath better. I have a 4banger I would not wish it on anybody else but then again she is mine so she stays

lol. thanks for the well informed opinions. my future jeep will be a daily driver with occasional trips over the mountains from oregon to idaho, so i think that 6 cyl will come in handy!

Man, if you want speed you get the 6. If you want economy (ha ha) you get the 4. It doesn't matter, they both go the same places, climb the same trails, and bog the same mud.

My last Jeep (97 2.5) the previous owner had almost every bolt on performance upgrade available on there when I bought it: Intake, headers, exhaust, electric fan, and a jet performance chip, I added up all the advertised horsepower gain I should be seeing and it was around 60 HP...

Even with the proper gearing for the tires, that thing was a complete dog on the freeway, it was only a tad faster than my buddies stock 91 with a 2.5, and he had double the miles I had.

Now I have a 4.0 and even with the worst possible gearing for my tires, I can peel out and go 85+ (scary though)

505 performance has a turbo kit that will get it close the feel of a 4.0L however the MSRP on it is 3k. So just save a bit more and get a 6cly. Don't get me wrong for the right price I would buy a 4 though.

You'll definitely want a 6 banger to deal with the winds in the gorge and then cabbage. Even a 6 banger feels anemic when the wind is howling in the gorge.

Nope, I mean that wee little hill just east of Pendleton.
Running your intake into the cab and then eating cabbage is one of the few mods that will actually result in improved performance.

I had the 4 cylinder in my last jeep... Put a flow-pro on it and took the restrictor out of the air-intake, and it woke it up a little bit.. But no where close to a 6 cylinder.... He is trying to pull the wool over your eyes..

I own both a 4 cylinder and 6 cylinder. 1999 TJ Wranglers.
both are automatics.

first thing my son says when he drive my 6 cyl Sahara model is
it has more power but it is slightly heavier.

"Published" horsepower and displacement
2.5L 150.4 cid 117hp 135 lbft @ 3500 rpm 1388kg curb weight
4.0L 242.0 cid 190hp 230 lbft @ 3000 rpm 1459kg curb weight

SUBTRACT horsepower due to the gas/alcohol (10%) mixture
additional electronics and wear......

everything gets old and tougher to maintain !

Yes

In theory, yes you could actually get a 4 cyl to run alot faster than a stock 6.
Personally, I think a jeep wrangler should be light. I think it will perform better offroad/onroad this way. The US Army jeeps were 4 cyl.
You might instead consider a super charger/turbo charge kit.
Th link below is of a 4 cycl production model car by dodge with top speeds of 221 and 700hp. The 6 cyl wrangler gets 190hp?

Yep, you can make 4 bangers perform very well but horsepower costs money, how fast do you want to spend?

I took the restrictor plate off the Red Dragon. Let's keep that on the down-low, because it aint exactly "street legal".......................

Anyone?.........

4 Banger Power

I have a 97 SE, it has 160001 miles exactly, as of 20 minutes ago. rebuilt at 100000. original ax-5 rebuilt at 90000. I have an AEM brute Force Intake, Pacesetter Headers, MBRP Cat Back, Yella Terra rockers, Davis Unified Performance Ignition, 4.0 Throttlebody. I have started "Jenny Craig-ing" my rig.

I had steel bumpers front and rear, i took off the spare carrier and am strategically drilling holes in the front and rear. I just bought fiberglass fenders, hood, grill, windshield frame, bezel, and trunk. I also bought a polycarbon windshield to replace the glass one.

I am saving for Wilwood Discs front and rear, 4.88 for my STOCK 30 and 35 axles (no need to beef em up i have a 4 banger!). replacing my factory soft top with a rampage frameless. Replacing the stock Brake Master Cylinder with Wilwood manual braking system. even replacing the steering wheel.

Engine Performance to come is a 2.9 stroker kit by 505 Performance, and an Avenger Supercharger. a few more little tweaks and gadgets and ill have a 300+hp, 350+lb.ft. out of my fourbanger.

Yes, it'll cost my around 3 more years and with the rig and parts and minimal labor charges i will have spent 30k on her, but come on its a Jeep...well worth it

Negative, all else being equal.

Now my buddies 4.0 with 33's is on par with my 2.4 with 31's. His is at a mechanical disadvantage with the bigger/heavier tires.

Mine came with intake, exhaust, and a chip. I don't think it does much.

If the above theory were true, you could bolt an intake and exhaust on a 6-cyl and get V8 power...

It's basically a sophmoric argument. Kids in school argue their "special" 80cc dirtbike is as fast as a 125. The kid with the 125 says his beats 250's. The kid with the 250 says his beats 500s.

I raced a 2001 CR500R, it wasn't all that. I had better laptimes on my 2005 Factory KX250, despite the lower HP figure.
