4 wheel drive

If its pouring rain outside is it bad for your jeep to put it in 4 wheel drive? I know when the roads are full of snow that is when its good for 4 wheel drive but how about heavy rain?

I've done it occasionally when it was REALLY bad, but there needs to be enough standing water on the road surface for your tires to slip when you're making a turn to prevent binding.

You really shouldn't need 4x4 in the rain. It is only to be used when you can't get traction in 2WD... As mentioned, there isn't enough slip in rain for 4WD. If you're slipping in the rain, you probably just need to ease off the gas, or get better tires.

No. Only if there is a need for it. GEt used to only using the 4wd when you need it. If you get stuck in 2wd, the 4wd will get you out. If you get stuck in 4wd, you need a winch...

For snow and ice, maybe; only in very bad conditions. The tires usually more than compensate.

My rule of thumb: Use 2wd to get into trouble. Use 4wd to get out of it.

Using 4wd to look for trouble is a good way to start a very long walk.

I've had my Jeep for about 2 weeks now, and we've been getting snow storm after snow storm. Well I've generally been looking for trouble

As for 4wd in the rain I used it once last week when we had heavy heavy rain, but only because I have next to no tread left on my tires and she was dancing a bit.

As a corollary to the rule of thumb: 4wd is no better than 2wd when braking.
Had a friend in Mass. that bought a brand new Grand Cherokee and he loved the 4wd in the snow. He went skiing one weekend and forgot this corollary. He got it up to about 65 mph and then came to a curve in the road. He hit the brakes and managed to back it straight into a guardrail--still going about 65 mph. I guess my point is--don't use 4wd to go faster than is safe for the conditions.
This is not to say that 4wd is dangerous. Especially in snow, if you keep the corollary in mind, 4wd is often safer. You have more control with all 4 wheels under power.
