4 Wheel Drive question - '97 Wrangler

just a quick question for the group...

I bought a '97 Jeep Wrangler not too long ago, 60K miles and in fantastic shape. Although the owner did not provide the owner's manual with my purchase and (as bad as this might sound) I have no idea how to use the 4 wheel drive

With the winter weather coming I wanted to ask if anyone could provide me the info on how to enagage and disengage the 4 wheel drive properly

To engage 4wd high, just pull the lever next to the transmission shift lever straight up until it "clicks"(for lack of a better word right now). That will put your vehicle in 4wd High, for use in snowy conditions, and can be engaged at any speed. Do not use your 4wd on dry, paved roads, as this will cause binding in the driveline, and premature failure (along with some goofy handling characteristics). Welcome to the insanity, and don't be afraid to ask questions!

But I wouldn't engage 4-Hi when going any faster than say 10mph. And be sure that the dash light comes on telling you that its engaged. If you need the extra power of 4-Lo, pull over and put your Jeep in Neutral, and then maneuver the selector lever all the way up to 4-Lo and make sure it "clicked" into place and that the dash light is on. Put your Jeep into drive and away you go. When returning to 2WD, stop and put the Jeep in Neutral again and move the selector to 2-Hi and be sure that the dash light has turned off.

I'm with them

And never ever go over 45mph in 4HI......... If you have a manual tranny, you also will hardly ever go into 4LO unless you do some knarley Rock/Hill Climbing.......To ensure your going into 4LO you may want to from Neutral go into reverse.

For the winters 4HI......Never over 45mph

Use 4LO Off Road. Don't have to be "knarley Rock/Hill Climbing......."

Especially with an auto. I put it in 4Lo and in 1st gear and I barely had to touch the gas to get over the rocks at Payette Draw.

A lot of the time I put it in 4HI when I get off pavement, then 4LOW for basically anything but flat dirt ground. I'm a definate 4LOW fan. If it's too low, I use just use 2nd gear.

Why is that? You can engage 4 High at "any legal speed". According to the owners' manual.

do you really think its safe to go that fast on a non paved road? especially if is a well traveled dirt road....its harder to stop not to mention all the rocks you could spit up at ppl behind you and ect. ect.

Just the way I was taught. Our Dodge Ram had a limiting speed of 10-15mph for engaging 4Hi and it kinda fallowed me over... plus I really don't wanna blow anything to pieces while trying to engage the t-case while cruising down the road. If you really need 4Hi it should be engaged before you even start rolling imo.

When its snowing or for that matter icy I'll pull mine in/out of 4HI/2HI a dozen times on my way to work, at speeds of 45-60 mph. (less mph when its icy) I just hate black ice.

Didn't say anything about it being safe, but the vehicle is still well within its limits. Now whether the driver is still within his/her limits is something completely different.

EDIT: And traveling on a snow-covered freeway at 60-70 MPH in SE Michigan is pretty routine when we get a decent snow.

I was wondering about putting my Jeep in 4HI as well. I have a five speed and wanted to know if I need to shift to neutral before engaging 4wd
