4wheel drive question (Cherokee)

Having an issue with my 2000 Cherokee, and thought maybe someone could shed some light. It goes into 4wheel just fine and works. However when going back to 2wheel the 4wheel indicator light goes off but it stays in 4wheel.

Generally I have to stop and back up to get it out of 4wheel. Sometimes if I come to a stop quickly it will pop back to 2wheel. Never had any issue with it before, it would go in and out of 4wheel no problem.

Thanks for any thoughts...

Stock jeep? Check the linkage for the shifter might need adjusted. There is an adjustment screw on the linkage that should solve the issue.

Thanks!!

Still having the issue above. Wanted to get an opinion from some experts! I have a friend with a lift, and we put the Cherokee on the lift and the 4w to 2w worked just fine. Seems only when down on the pavement does it have the issue.

He though maybe it had to do with the fact that the front tires are new and the back have maybe 50% tread left. That they would in essence be screwing up the 4wd because of the slight size difference.

Does this make sense?? Just wanted to get a feel before I sprung for new tires...

Thanks!

The tires could very well be the problem. If you don't replace all 4, the new ones should be in the back.

It could be the tires.. but that just sounds odd. but who knows.. Can you jack up the front axle some and see if it will go back into 2wd.. thus making it think the tires are the same height.

Went ahead and replaced the older tires and it works flawlessly. In fact it's very quiet now. It always was louder in 4wd. My tire maintenance is awful and in retrospect I think I was screwing up our old Grand Cherokee too.

So live and learn...
