5th Gear issues.

Hey Guys,
Well I just bought my first Jeep (97 TJ, 4.0L, 5 speed) and just yesterday was the first chance I got to bring it out on the highway. Well to make a long story short I went to shift into 5th at about 65 mph while the tach was reading just over 2.8k and it was then I noticed that when I tried to accelerate nothing was happening. It seemed as if all my horsepower fell out and just sat right at 65. I was wondering what would cause this and the general consensus of people I talked to said that in the high end it simply didn't have enough torque to spin the 33s. Can anyone confirm this or give me any other suggestions as what it could be?
Thanks a lot.

Sounds about right...what were your RPM's in 5th gear?

5th gear is not designed as an accelerating gear...it's designed to lower your engine's RPMs at highway speeds in order to use less gas. Basically, once you're up to the speed you want to be at, you shift into 5th. Although you should have the ability to accelerate slowly, but it ain't gonna pull hard. The 33's might be the cause of you not being able to accelerate at all though. If that's the case, you'll want to look into regearing your Jeep for that size of tires.
