97 Jeep Starter Problem

I have a 97 Jeep 4cyl TJ. I took her on the trails & through medium puddles yesterday. Now the battery is dead & she won't start. When I try to jump her the starter turns once & then there is a few seconds of clicking before that repeats again. Any idea what could cause this? I noticed too that just before the starter issues occured my check guages light came on.

I am taking my battery to be checked immediately but that cannot be the whole problem can it?

Cheers,

John

Mud is bad, the alternator is down low on the 97 and is subject to getting water and mud in it. Take a look at it, you can flush it out with clean water from a garden hose, sometimes that will *fix* it, sometimes it won't. That check gauges light was probably from the alternator.
