98 Sahara Q's

Wasn't exactly sure where to put this thread, but there's a 98 Sahara for $1750, and has some tranny problem. Seller says 2nd an 3rd gear slips and would need work. The Wrangler has about 143xxx miles on it, I haven't really worked or read up on the tranny work, and was wondering how much would a newer/used tranny cost for these older Sahara models? Does it cost an arm and a leg to take it to the dealer? I have normally in the past own manual cars, but have not had any problems with them. This sounds like an awesome deal, any opinions or suggestions what to look for while I take it for a sin this weekend? I will be sure to post updates about the car when I find out. Thanks in advance.

you could get a brand new tranny for around 2500 bucks and kbb.com lists that model with that many miles at being worth $8500. 1750 + 2500 = still a very good deal.

I had a 98 Sahara with 3spd AT that had the seals go out about a year ago. Dealer said new one would be around $2300. Rebuild was around $1600 if I remember correctly. (that may have included the new tail housing on tcase...can't remember)

for $1750 I would buy it and replace the 3 speed auto with the over drive trans out of a cherokee you just need to remember to get the computer for it

but heres a auto trans from a 2001 off ebay with about 10,000 miles on it
it should be the same trans that is in there now it even has the transfer case on it

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2001-...spagenameZWDVW

if you look around you can find the trans pretty cheap

Isn't the 2001 a 4 speed auto ? The XJ uses an AW4 so the ecu and the harness would be needed or maybe just the pigtail. Either way I would snap up the sahara at that price for sure, do it, you will kick yourself otherwise.

Thanks gang. Guys a little busy this weekend, but he says sometimes this week I could give it a test drive. Hopefully there's not much rust on the thing... If all goes well, I'll be sure to post up pictures. ~

nope 2001 is a 3 speed auto

I think 2003 is when they started to use the 4 speed auto

heres a good write up on an AX15 to AW4 trans swap
