A/C Trouble - No Cold Air

Hi. I have a 1996 Jeep Cherokee. The A/C blows warm to hot air. The compressor does not engage so I took it into a shop and they said the compressor runs when you apply power directly to it (blows cool air then), checked the clutch fuse, and checked freon pressure (he stated it was good). They said I have an electrical issue and would like me to leave the Jeep there for them to troubleshoot. Has anyone come across a situation like this before and what did you have to do to fix it? I certainly do not mind paying to have it fixed but my mechanic can not get to it for another 7 days. Thanks in advance.
