A couple of things..............

I went to Auto Zone the other day to get a code cleared, I asked the guy if he could do it for me, he said " I can't anymore, but you can". I asked why he can't anymore. He told me that there is some kind of nation wide sting going on because people are asking to have codes cleared and not getting the work done to fix whatever the code is telling them. Then when the vehicle breaks down and has a serious repair bill they are trying to come back on whoever cleared the code, like Auto Zone, and saying that they cleared the code but did not advise them to do anything about it. He told me that it is a $500.00 fine for the tech that cleared the code and a $1000.00 fine for Auto Zone if they get caught. I do not know if this is true or not, but this is what the Auto Zone guy told me.

Anyone know the best place to get a OBDII code reader so I can start doing this myself at home?

Scooby

Sounds like he's too lazy to drag himself out to do it for you and is making up a BS story to cover himself. There are no laws prohibiting the clearing of codes.
