Thats pretty neat...I must be old skool as I just use my unrooted DroidX's bluetooth to stream audio of Pandora, Slacker, IHeartRadio, and Netflix through my $179 Sony MEX Xplod head unit.

I'm even more old school; I don't even know what rooted and unrooted means!

root is a unix term, linux is closely related to unix, android is a distribution of linux meant to run on mobile devices, root means the main account on the system, has all privileges to do whatever without restriction.

consumer android devices are restricted, ie the account the owner uses is not the root account, because giving common users root access is a bad idea.. any program they run would also run with root access and could make changes that could potentially be bad for the system.

Hah, cool.

So that was you!!! Had you already posted a link to your hack on this forum? If so, I apologize if I overstepped my bounds in any way.

How's the system working out for you? I found your build while researching Android devices for a new stereo in my CJ5. What I really want to be able to do is to run apps (like I have on my smart phone) directly on the device in my dash. Is that possible with your Nook, or with any off-the-shelf product you know of?

Nice work. Cheers!!!

Haha, no worries. I didn't post a link here myself, but someone else did a while back.

The system has treated me very well. It's better than any head unit I've ever used, and I've used some nice ones. You just have to know it's limitations, and be okay with them. If you don't care about satelite radio, cd's, or FM, then I can't think of much reason not to do this. As for me, my entire music collection is MP3, although I find that I use Slacker Radio and it's caching (paying monthly) more than anything. Basically, you can create your own stations, or choose one of theirs, and have it's content synced with your device nightly. Each cached station is a couple of hundred songs. As long as you've got the device on and plugged in, the content refreshes automatically. I've always got a nice mix of my favorite tunes, and I don't ever have to listen to a commercial. It's the perfect solution really. I can tether to my phone, but find it's not needed.

Since the Nook is rooted and running CyanogenMod 7, I can run most any app. I know there are some graphics intense games that would stumble a bit on the Nook, but that's not a surprise considering it's specs. I use bluetooth GPS, and an OBDII sensor, and can get instant feedback on so many things. Almost any Android device will allow you to do the same. Here's the thing though, when using in a vehicle that gets a lot of direct sunlight, the screen brightness is the most important aspect. The Nook happens to have one of the best screens I've seen, especially when you consider it's cheap price.

While I certainly could have spent more, or even integrated it completely in the dash, that wasn't part of my design plan. I wanted something cheaply replaced, and easily removed. It's no different than detaching a stereo faceplate. I'm also not locked in to the Nook itself. I've got viable upgrade paths with minimal effort. The hardest part of the install, was modifying the center bezel for fitment of the EQ. Do yourself a favor, and implement some sort of physical knob for controlling volume. You'll hate anything else.
