Any Benefits to Buying New(er)?

As I still wait for my tax return to come in, so I can get my Jeep, I'm faced with the decision to buy a '99-'02 TJ fully, or go newer and get financed for the extra $5,000-7,000ish.

I will be driving this 30 min. each way to work 5 days a week, and plan to also take it off-roading when I can, but nothing extremely serious. I'd like to go over fallen branches, through mud and over rough terrain, more so than climbing any rocks or going on advanced obsticles.

I was thinking about a 3" suspension lift, a 1" body lift and 33" tires. Maybe re-gearing and new axles if needed.

Now, if I go for the more expensive Wrangler ('04-'08) I would use just about all of my spare money on the down payment, and finance the rest, but if I buy a '99-'02 out right, I will have some left over to star working on it right away.

Besides the possibility of less rust on the body, is there a worth-while benefit to buying newer? I'm leaning toward the '99-'02 Jeeps I've been looking at that are going for around $4,000-$6,000.

A 99-02 TJ in that price range is gonna be well used or a 4 banger... I'd say get s 97ish i6 and save up/use any remainder mod it. FYI my 01 with 38k was over $11k private party a year and a half ago... There are better deals out there, but mine was cherry, bone stock and loved by her PO...

since you're already on a budget, I'd just try to make sure you get one already geared/axled close to how you want it; unless you're a motorhead and can do it yourself for very little cost. Upgrading those will be (by far) my most expensive mod.
