Anyone ruined a radio?

So I did a search for this (may have missed something).
Just wondering about leaving the top down in a down pour. A lot of people talk about what rain "could" do to your radio but I haven't seen anyone that's ruined a radio from rain....
So anyone out there? If so was it factory or aftermarket?
I'm going to put an aftermarket in my TJ. Just curious if they hold up as well. I imagine my Jeep will experience a few down pours in it's lifetime.

Well, I ruined a radio once. I punched it six times because it kept screwing up and it pissed me off. Broke the screen.

I've gotten some wet from hosing out the inside after a trip in the mud and it didn't seem to do anything to the stereo. They were all Pioneer. I should mention though that the one I punched hadn't gotten wet so water damage wasn't it's issue.

As a new Jeeper (traded in 1994 Mustang Convertible that I loved for 16 years), I too was worried about frying my stereo if caught out in a rainstorm. To allay my fears, I looked for a Marine stereo with the thinking that if it's good enough for a boat, it should be just fine in a Colorado downpour or two.

I found a Kenwood KMR-440U CD receiver w/USB & Aux interfaces/jacks on the front. It has a removable faceplate to discourage theft and it even interfaces with and controls iPods & USB devices through the stereo itself. I haven't yet installed it as the vendor sent me the install kit for 07 & up instead of the kit for my '06 TJL, but expect to have it installed w/in the next 2 weeks & can't wait to jam to my own playlist already!

Hope this helps answer your query...

Here's the URL to the KenwoodUSA.com details:
Kenwood - KMR-440U

The KMR-440U is an Advanced Marine CD Receiver Featuring:

• New Enter and Return Key Operation
• Favorite Function Presets
• My Playlist Function for iPod

My jeeps been through some downpours and everything works fine... Your best bet is to not let it happen, not just because of your radio but because its a pita to take care of your carpet.

Hi,
I can confirm that the stock stereos do not fair well in a downpour. I left my top off thinking.. "It's a Jeep.. I'm sure everything is waterproof." Yeah.. not so much. Now I'm on stereo number 2. Don't do it!

Rain water, which is very pure distilled water, very seldom permanently harms low-voltage electronics. Given enough time to thoroughly dry out, they are usually fine afterward.
