AP - Fatal Rollover in NV mine

Just saw this posted on another forum. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends.

Californian dies when Jeep rolls into Nevada mine pit
ASSOCIATED PRESS

2:01 p.m. May 23, 2007

VIRGINIA CITY, Nev. – A man on a rock hunting excursion with his wife was killed when his Jeep rolled off a narrow trail into an abandoned mining pit in this historic mining town, authorities said.
Alvin Ellwood Baldwin, 63, of Occidental, Calif., was trying to maneuver the vehicle on a narrow trail above the Loring Pit when he lost control and rolled 500 feet into the pit, the Storey County sheriff's office said.

Baldwin was ejected and pronounced dead at the scene Tuesday afternoon.

Sheriff's Sgt. Kenneth Quirk said the man's wife had gotten out of the Jeep because the route was too treacherous.

It's news reports like this that really drive home what can happen to us if we make just one mis-step in our sport/passion.

If anyone knows more about the circumstances or the chain of events leading up to this tragic accident, please let us know.

I can't imagine what she must have gone through. She obvoiusly had to watch the whole thing and then walk out for help.

If anyone knows more about the circumstances or the chain of events leading up to this tragic accident, please let us know.

I was in the sixth grade math-science combo class he was supposed to be subbing for the following morning a day or two later, he was also a family friend so this story [B]is[B] important to me on a personal level.

His wife got out not too long before, said she was getting scared, she was far enough away that she did see most of the events that followed. I, after seeing all the articles over the past few years and hearing the story a few times, have come to know he did not have his seat-belt on at all, but his e brake had failed or slipped some.

The school I was in told us all that break and belt mess, followed by shaking fingers and telling us to buckle up.

The situation was purely chance, none of it was by his own error, that one time it happened that the e brake wouldn't hold. He was getting out for a reason only his wife could know - I assume to hug her and send her off to wherever they were starting. He was dead on impact, brain trauma was the cause everyone logically pointed to on the scene.

I've been seeing a lot of articles posted into many forums like this so I recently started correcting the false parts of the stories and imaginations of the readers.

He has a handful of daughters and his lovely wife who he is survived by, and I assure you the community he was in is still impacted to this day, there was recently a small, mostly family, memorial. Unfortunately, what many people may never know is how he impacted the minds and hearts of thousands of middle school students and high school student over his years of teaching and substituting.

But, I suppose the moral of the story is to not throw all of your trust into your vehicle, the hard fact is that it won't always be there for you. I've linked one of the few pictures left out there. I have yet to find a picture of him, it looks like the news article was removed.

Seems like emergency brakes are almost an afterthought for most auto manufacturers. I don't trust them.
