ARB Compressor / Air Tank ???s

hello,

iīm going to install a 2.5 gallon air tank on my TC plate (on the drivers side next to the TC).
the only reason for that is that itīs annoying to me that my ARB compact (CKSA12) compressor turns on for a short time every time i engage a locker.

is my ARB compact compressor strong enough to fill up a 2.5 gallon gas tank?
here are the technical specifications.

the ARB compact compressor has a switch that turns on the compressor when the pressure is to low and that turns it off when the pressure is high enough. at how much PSI does it turn on and off? iīd like to use this swiths also with the air tank.

how often can i engage a locker when such a 2.5 gallon air tank is full before the compressor turns on again?

IIRC the ARB pump kicks in and out with the range the lockers were designed for, 85-105 psi. That little pump would have to run for a very long time to fill up that big tank. The small ARB compressors were not made for this kind of duty cycle. I have seen them burn up just while filling a 33" tire.
I would not recommend making your little pump do that, but if your system had no leaks you could engage and dis-engage your lockers a BUNCH of times from a 2.5 gallon tank.

the ARB compressor can run 21 minutes before it has to cool down.
isnīt that enough to fill up a 2.56 gallon air tank from 85-105 psi?

i also have a mobile viair 400P compressor. i could use it if the tank is completely empty.

but i donīt want to install the viair in my jeep. i also need it on th eboat and when iīm camping.

You could try timing it with the tank. But I have seen it take 10-15 minutes to fill a tire. That's only going to 30 PSI. Once that compressor tries to push that tank past 90 psi its output is going to be next to nothing.
Remember that the small ARB compressors don't have a thermal overload on them. Meaning your first clue that its getting to hot run is going to be when the magic smoke leaves it.

perhaps i should think about instaling the viair 400P.
will it work on the drivers side front fender where actually my ARB compressor is installed?
or isnīt it made for being installed under the hood?

No clue on that one NE. I would think any of the small via air would work just fine for this. You dont need a large volume of air. So I would think grab a small Viair, a regualtor, a tank and you should be just fine. Sorry I cant be of more help on this part. I run the Kilby on board air which takes about 20 seconds to fill my 1.75 gallon tank from 0 to 150 psi.

how long will it take to fill up four 35s tires from 12 to 30 psi?
perhaps ui should save some money and install a real on board air system and not such a slow electric compressor.

how do you install such a kilby compressor? do you have some pics?
could i install such a compressor in my 06 4.0L TJ with A/C?

Sort of, I won the kilby system in a Jeep website drawing much the one this forum has. Except you don't have to pay anybody (or be supporting member) to enter the drawing I was in at links4jeeps.com. It was only going to be a drawing for a used compressor and a clutch. Until Brad kilby heard about it, then he donated the rest of the stuff like the Tank, Gauge, Manifold, Pressure switch, Hose and everything else to make it a complete Kilby on-board air system. I was lucky enough to be the one to have my name drawn

I have since went to a Chevy air filter to get rid of my air box. But other then that everything is still pretty much the same.

I didn't time mine on 35's but on 285/75/16 (33/11.5) I go from 8 psi to 31 in just under 35 seconds per tire @2000 rpm.
Install is not that hard. The kit comes with everything you need and VERY good instructions. If your mechanically minded at all you wont have any problem. My Rubi is an 06 with a/c so I know the kit will fit your Jeep

under 35 seconds for a 33" tire from 8 to 31 psi? wow...
i needed over 5 minutes for a 32" tire from 12-30 psi with the viair 400P.

can i adjust the maximum pressure of that setup? you said the ARB lockers need 85-105 psi.

will it be faster at higher RPMs? now i also have a reason for installing a hand-throttle...

now i know what i want...itīs expensive but much better than a viair-toy-compressor.

where did you install the air tank? were all hoses in this kit long enough?
what do i ned more to install my ARB solenoids?

You can with a different pressure switch but you wouldn't want too. The kilby kicks in at 120 psi and out at 150. It works very well like this. For your ARBs all you would have to do is get a simple air regulator and put it in-line before your lockers and set ti 100 90 psi. that way no matter what pressure the tank is at your lockers would only see 90 psi.

Yes the higher the RPM the faster the compressor is. At 2000 rpm it puts out close to 8 cfm of air at 90 psi. An example of how much air that is my snap on 1/2 drive air impact wrench uses 5 cfm @90 psi. Which hooked to the Kilby compressor is what I use to rotate the wheels on the Jeep.

Yup, I set mine at 2000 rpm while airing up my tires and those of my friends who have electrics. They do one tire and i air up their other 3 before they get done.

I installed the tank in the same place you were going to install yours. Just behind the transfer case between the drive shaft and the frame rail. Kilby will send enough hose to run from the compressor to the tank and then to a quick disconnect (which is also included) for your air tools, tire inflators or what ever.

your ARBs would be installed the same way they are now. You would simply need a regulator to drop the pressure to something they can handle and a way to hook them up to the regulator, such as hooking the 2 lines to a small manifold which the regulator is hooked too.

Yes NE is correct.

Here is a pic of my engine from an overhead view. The Kilby compressor sits on the left side (passenger) while your A/C is on the right side (Driver). This is on a 04+ Jeeps, on others it may be in a different place but it will still work.

one disadvantage is that my alternator would be lower with this kit.
could taht cause problems when i drive through deep water?

It hasn't bothered mine in 2 years and several times a year I do wheeling like this

today i talked to some friends. some of them use HD compressor on their tours trough the deserts in africa.

they said that with the kilby compressor the fuel consumption will increase a bit. and another disadvantage is that the engine has to run when i want to use the compressor.

they all use compressors that are belt-driven by a 1.1 kW electric engine like this one:



wouldnīt such a compressor be better for me? itīs as fast as the kilby.

I'd imagine it would drain ur battery pretty fast so you'd still need the engine running and possibly need a red top which would just add more to ur gfs list.
