arc welder

I was considering picking up a 230 volt arc welder. I was going to run a new outlet in the garage opposite the dryer in the laundry room on the other side of the wall. Seller says dryer is probably on a 50 amp breaker and said I should switch it out to an 80 amp breaker. Sound right to you welders? Just checking before I drop the money. He also said I could just add another breaker and put the new outlet in the garage, but I'm not sure I'm skilled enough to do that.

I'm sure there will be many other weekend electricians responding to your question but in my case the dryer was a 30 amp circuit. I swapped mine out to NG along with the cooktop to pull the available power for a spa.

Big question will be how much available power do you have coming into the panel? Just how populated is the panel (existing load)? 80 amp service is going to require some very large conductors (something like #4's). Sounds like a pretty good size welder.

fwiw, i wouldnt just swap the breaker. i know in my house, the wiring is polly wally crappy and if i try to go to larger breakers, wires or breakers melt. dont ask how i know.

i would run the welder on the 50 amp breaker and see if it trips it. its not like you're gonna be welding at wide open throttle all the time. if it DOES trip, id either run a new service from the main box or have someone do it.

what is the entrance in your house and what is the sub panel in the garage. i have a 200amp in my house and a 100 amp sub panel in the garage. i also have a lincoln electric 230v arc welder in my garage i have it running on a 50amp breaker and it has never tripped it in fact mine is recomended to have a 50amp. do not get a breaker bigger than what your welder calls for. i know of one guy who runs his on a 40amp. you will most likely never get anywhere neer the full power output of that welder. i never have anyways

my mig recommends 30amp (lincoln sp 175t) - if your dryer is on a 30 DO NOT put in a 50 unless you know what size wire is in the wall - if it were me id run new breaker, new wire, and outlet! its really not that big of a deal if you were going to split off the dryer outlet you can run some new stuff.

You guys should be living in my house. It is an electricians nightmare. Aluminum wiring, Antique panels, hodge podge DIY 220 plug in garage, junctions not in junction boxes. It is a good thing my dad is an electrican and can fix it all for the cost of materials or i would never have bought this house.

i pretty much AM. aluminum wiring....ugh. the first time i fired up my biodiesel still i melted a main breaker so half the lights in the house were sizzling. breaker didnt trip....and wouldnt turn on or off. i had to swap it with the stove until i could ORDER a new breaker.....thats right, nowhere in town had the damned thing...then when i got it it was stupid expensive.

You should see all the crappy wire I have pulled out of my house and all the live connections that were just sitting in the open in the attic and basement. Was up in the attic one day and a wire jumped up like a snake and the ends were HOT!!!

KG4KPG, looking to make somethings are we??:LOL
