ATTEN. NJ Jeep owners - question about changing color
ok well i was planning on painting my YJ from black to army green last weekend but then i decided to look into laws of NJ DMV and such. I looked on my Registration card and Title, i noticed there is a decription of the COLOR of my jeep. my question is has anyone changed the color of their jeep and if so what were the steps you took with the DMV?
Color is on the title. DMV will be happy to re-title the vehicle for you and issue you a new registration with the appropriate information. I think title fees are about $60, and registration over $50/yr at this point.
Or you could just not worry about it.
'06 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited
'81 Ford F100
'83 Rx-7 (61K miles, 100% original)
'89 BMW 750iL (repairs always pending)
I can't help you with the color, but i CAN suggest that you avoid the Randolph DMV like the plague. I registered my TJ there in February, after standing in the "outside line" for two hours... I was so happy to get through the doors that the two hour "inside line" seemed like a gift!
"Oh, this vehicle was purchased out of state? I'm going to need 17 additional forms of ID, and these 4 forms filled out in greek, spanish, and °«µì¿╨↕◘'in (southern dialect)..."
honestly I think I'm just going to change the registration and call it a day. Its weird though cuz I downloaded the Title application from the DMV website and under the Description Vehicle section there is nothing for COLOR of vehicle..... besides when you sign the title over they never see your vehicle anyways and if you get pulled over the cop doesn't ask for your title. At least not in NJ lol
so long as you have something with the vin on it, like the insurance card or registration, you're good. if a cop asks just tell him you had it painted. i don't think a cop would care though.
i know that some states just use a selection of colors with a number associated with it. they just pick whatever color is closest so its not really an exact science. my jeep is gold but my registration says yellow because its closer to yellow than the light gold on the number grid.
so i guess my point is if you want to paint it just do it so long as you keep the registration with the vin on it to prove its the same jeep.

I can tell you from experience getting pulled over with my motorcycle...
Originally my motorcycle was silver and black but i painted it a couple years ago to a dark candy apple red. I was pulled over for 7 over on a back road one day and when i showed my registration, all he did was check the vins to make sure they matched. Nothing was done as far as being reprimanded for having a red bike with a silver registration...
so yeah, i'm thinkin as long as the vins are the same you'll be alright.
just like owen said you should be friend. im from nj and a buddy of mine painted his from white to green. he has gotten pulled over and just explain that it was originally white and it was painted. like owen says if he really wants all he needs to do is look at the vins
Depends on the cop and his mood that day... A few years ago my buddy got pulled over at like 2am I was in the passenger seat, and he had painted his car from white to primer gray and the cop noticed it on his registration and said he better get It corrected at DMV cause he could write him a ticket. I don't know what the ticket would be but I'm sure a jerk off cop could find something.
What a screwed up state NJ must be for them to care about such things.
I'm not saying you'd definitely get a ticket for it... Even when it was mentioned to my friend he didn't get a ticked but it has the color of your vehicle on the reg and if your vehicle doesn't match the cop would obviously notice. At one time car theft was a HUGE problem in NJ so it is something that police would enforce
