Arrow Auto Locker in the D35 of a YJ?

I've read countless articles and write-ups on lockers. One writer will champion auto-lockers, others will poo-poo them for a short wheel base Jeep... Something to the effect of "if you let your wife or daughter take it to the grocery store, they will spin out, crash into an orphanage, and cause the spontaneous combustion of thousands of kittens."



Eventually, I'll go for beefier axles, but for the next year or so I want to lock my D30 and D35. I'm thinking Aussie Lockers in both with a POSI-LOK on the front instead of the vacuum disconnect.

What say you? Don't sugar coat it, either.

(Its my DD: 1995 YJ 2.5L Manual transmission with stock suspension that will get a 2.5 inch lift soon on 31" AT or MT tires)

put an auto locker in a manual D35 and you will get to upgrade your rear axle sooner than you want, right after crashing the busload of nuns
(save the money for the upgrade)

an auto locker with posi-lok in the D30

Is the daily driving that kills the D35 or the light to moderate off-roading?

First off I am opposed to locking a D35 period.

Secondly, how do you wheel? If you are not one who has a wheel off the ground constantly I would lean towards a LSD such as a Detroit TrueTrac. I have used them in front and rear on many vehicles and they are practically un-noticeable to the driver but they work.

We have locked lots of them without issue, but we dont bash our jeeps to a pulp either. My bro in laws is a 93 and has 4.56's on a detroit and is still going after 13 years

Honestly, I think I run into more issues without lockers and all 4 tires on the ground than I do with a tire in the air. When you mix crawling rocks and dirt/sand together, there are a lot of times all 4 tires are on the ground, and you "need" a locker.

A TrueTrac is not a true locker, that is why I asked about having a tire in the air. It only needs a small amount of resistance for the helical gears to mesh and create a mechanical link to the wheel with traction. It senses an RPM differential from one tire to the other on the same axle and if a tire is in the air it cannot create enough resistance to engage the LSD.

I have been places with a TrueTrac front and rear that many think you need a locker just because of tire placement and keeping all four on the ground, even with minimal pressure.

I am definitely not bashing my Jeep on the trail. Until I get my lift and a set of 31's, I will continue to have a wheel or two in the air here and there. The tracbar is gone, and I'm doing disconnects within the next week or so. That will help for sure.

Most of my wheeling is mountain trails, some mud, with hardly no crawling (unless it is part of the trail and it isn't too gnarly).

I had a locked d35 with 4.88s. I threw an Aussie Locker in there for a while i thought it was amazing! I wheel my Jeep pretty hard. My D35 died on me a few months ago and im upgrading to a 8.8. Not saying you shouldnt put a locker in it, IMO it all depends on how you wheel. Mine is also a DD/TOY. So my Jeep still aint on the road. Ive heard great things about a TrueTrac, but next time im locking the D30. Good luck with the route you go!

I've been running 35s in a D35 with a powertrax for years without a problem. I do run a lot of rocks and mud. I like the way it drives on the road too. I'm currently swapping an 8.8, because I know I will get into trouble eventually. I was lucky enough to find someone selling an 8.8 with 4.56 gears and a Tru Trac locker for $300. One shaft was broken, but I was changing to alloy anyway. I would say that if you only run light trails and some shallow mud, then go for a LSD. You really don't need a locker.
