Backspacing

I called a local shop to buy a lift kit and figured I would ask about tire size while I was at it.

He told me 15x8 5x4.5 bolt pattern, which I know is correct. Then he said 4.5 on the backspacing. I asked if they would "stick out" at all. He said "nope, they'll sit flush with the wheel well". I asked about going wider, he then said "if you go wider she'll dance all over the road!".

I dont want something with a sh*tty ride, but I dont want the thing to look tall and narrow. What backspacing is good with this setup?
Maybe some pics of jeeps with 4.5 backspacing will help me???

BTW-3" lift w/33"x12.50x15" on 15"x8" rims.

I would go to another shop.
Here is a 16X8 with 4 7/16 backspacing with a 33 X 11.5 tire and you can see they stick out just a little bit past the flare. The thing to know about this is that its a Rubi which comes stock with a 1" wider flare then other Jeeps. (except Sahara's)



So with a 12.5 tire and the same backspacing I really dont see how he is going to get it flush.

4.5 is a little bigger than 4 7/16. think of 4.5 as 4 8/16 as compared to 4 7/16.

Justgotjeep has it right. The these wheels will stick out 1/16" inch farther then a 4.5 backspacing would stick out. Not enough to even be able to tell the difference.
Once your tire monkey mounts a tire that is 1" wider under a flare that cover 1" less, there is no way he can get it flush with the flare was my point.
I would find another shop.

Im not buying the wheels and tire there. Just the lift since they have it in stock and I wont have to wait for shipping.

I dont know what hes talking about most people here run 3.75BS when they get 12.5's and they have no problme with "dancing around"
otherwise you run the rick of rubbbin control arms and things, the only thing i can think of is if they dont do alignments when they get a lift and bigger tires and then the car would "dance" all over, so make sure they do an alignment for you when they finish the lift

I am not sure where he is getting that "dancing" theory. I can't see how a different backspacing would effect how it drives at all.

doesnt the backspacing determine where the load is placed on the tires (inside/middle/outside)? if so, i can see how that could affect ride a bit... maybe i'm wrong... i'm a newb, who knows?

This is my YJ with 4.5" backspacing. The tires stickout a little but that is due to the full width axles.





BTW it does not dance!

no it doesnt move where the weight is ont the tires, it moves the tires out away from the hub a little bit, if you have properly aired up tires the weight will rest right on the middle of the tire, unless of course your axles are bent

think about it how could moving the wheels out change where the weight is, it would only happen if the axles were bowed
I---I is the same as I----I right the weight is still destubuted in the same spot on the tire just farther away
