To the best of my knowledge 33" tires, at least the 285/70r17 flavor of 33 (not the 33x12.5) will fit without a lift so long as you have wheels with 4.5" backspacing or less or 1.25" spacers on stock wheels. A popular lift, one I'm considering, is actually called a leveling kit which puts a 1" spacer in the rear and a 2" up front and if you're comfortable working on cars it definitely should be something you can do by yourself without special tools. The Teraflex leveling kit seems to be the most popular but there are others.
Note that even with the leveling kit the wheels could still be an issue without spacers since this isn't a height problem rather a wheel offset problem since the stock wheels put the tire too far under the fender that it's too close to the suspension components to go any wider, you could do a 33" (255/80r17) BFG KM2 and retain the same tire width as stock. Some like this, some call them pizza cutters. Personally I don't think they look bad at all but I'm turned off because they are Load Range E tires and that's too stiff a sidewall for a vehicle this light IMO.
