Best battery

I think I need a new battery but just want to get the best one. What does everyone recommend?

I've heard good things about Optima batteries. You shouldn't need anything special unless you are running winches and other things that will drain the battery.

I would also try the batteries at Costco or Sams Club... Really good warranty and I've never had a problem even in the severe cold of Montreal winters...

Since Johnson Controls took over Optima batteries and outsourced them to Mexico. The quality of the battery has gone way down. I had a yellow top go out on me in the middle of nowhere and it was fairly new. I only recommend the Sears Diehard battery. You cant go wrong. Optima batteries have been good for years and they used to be all I used but after they were outsourced, I wouldn't trust it.

I left my lights on for six hours one time with a Diehard and it still had cranking power to fire the motor.

Ok thanks!! Something really odd happened. I tried to turn the overhead lights on and start it at the same time and it wouldn't... So I'm thinking that's the battery.

I'd check and clean the terminals. Check the water level, add distilled water as needed and charge it before buying a new battery. The Gold Series at Sears appears to have a decent guarantee for the money. I've been researching batteries since mine is OE and 8 years old now. Good luck.

Whatever u do stay away from autocraft at advance auto parts. They're batteries suck. The two vehicles ive put them in they didnt last a year and ive had them both replaced twice on warranty. Next time they die im going with Diehard.

Good to see all is ok now. Just want to add the everstart battery from wal-mart is one of the highest rated out there. I have used them and never had a problem. Not that expensive either. Beats paying 3x as much for an optima battery or something else way over priced.

My #1 priority, well, #1 and #2 are

1) It must be spillproof (ie optima style technology)
2) It must be deep cycle. Very important when running things like winches.

I run a dual purpose optima battery. Works great. Optima has a $25 mail-in rebate going until June 30th.

As an Interstate dealer I would shy away from the optima series battery. Quality has taken a dive in the last few years. Hate to say that but it is what it is.

Yup. That's what happens when you ship your production over to Mexico and completely stop caring about QC. Not only that, they are a PITA in terms of warranty. Even when they KNOW their batteries have problems (certain models are known to be poor) they won't honor a warranty if you don't buy from an AD, which to me is pretty poor. I had one die that I got from Amazon, and they refused to replace it, even thought they KNEW there is a severe problem with all D51. Suffice to say, after the one in my s2000 dies, I will no longer purchase Optima products again. Too bad, they used to be the best.

House brands are starting to crank out the gel cell spiral batteries too. I had an O'reilly unit that went toe to toe with any optima I've ever had.

Sears diehard platinum in the jeep.

In the excursion I run autozone duralast gold top 1000 cca. Great warranty. There are autozone's every where. I had a problem with them last week. Took the pair in and was back out the door in less than 10 minutes.

I work in a battery factory and the spiral wound technology seems to be one of the most durable longest lasting batteries that we have seen when people bring them in to us for disposal/recycling.

Deep cycle is a good choice also as the plates are thicker for a longer reserve capacity also making them very durable. Not as good for CCA if you live in a colder area as thicker, less plates means less surface area and less CCA's.

One thing to be careful of is CA versus CCA. CA is for cranking amps @ 32 F., CCA is for cold cranking amps @ 0 F. Big difference in how an engine turns over at 30 degrees versus 0 on a cold January morning. However, too many cranking amps will be an acid starved battery that won't have a very long life.

All that said I run a 770 CCA sealed battery that does great for cold mornings and holds up well when running the winch.

I would highly suggest anyone looking for a new battery to stay away from Optima. The last two that I had (over the last 18 months) went bad very early. I agree that when the company changed manufacturing sites, the quality went way down.
I only use Sears batteries now...
