Anything except the above two.

see how this is gonna go?

okay, I was kidding. best? that depends on your criteria for evaluation.

for offroading, Rubicon is the best in stock form.

year model? well that depends. some say the newer the better, some say the older the better.

For driving on street the newer the better.

The 2012 JK Diesel Rubicon Pickup. I'm putting in an order today.

But I'll have to go with 2005 as the best year. (MINE!!)

In the year XXXX, the (XXXX+1) model will only be driven by soccer moms to the mall, because they changed (insert minor upgrade here).

That seems to be the pattern on basically any Wrangler forum.

If it is still running, and doesn't give you problems you have a good year / model

I had a 1997 Dodge Stratus that got horrible reviews. Mine lasted 170k miles with only a few minor repairs. Any vehicle, regardless of model and year can have some winners. Some years / models have a higher probability of lasting longer. That being said, my 2002 WJ Limited had lots of non engine issues. I'd rank that year low because of the problems with the blend doors locking ($$$$$).

1977-79 Factory 304 V8, wide ratio T-18 transmission with the granny low first gear.

Realistically though, there's so many good things that have come and gone over the decades. The best part is that you can customize any Jeep to be the best you want it to be.

It's a tie between first one ever made and latest one. Without the first none of the others would exist but having owned both, it's hard to argue with the current edition. The reality is they were all good at the time.
