Blacked out Tail Lights

Hey guys. Are blacked out taillights legal in NY? If you don't know what I mean, I am talking about the black lenses that the color bulbs shine through. Thanks ahead of time.

This is going to start a riot lol. the answer is that they are not illegal. BUT, thats not the same as being legal though. If you paint them yourself, with say VHT nightshades, they tell you that it is for offroad or show use only. there are legalities that specify the amount of light output from a single bulb, and if your lights are too dark then youre in trouble, cant say for sure with your state but if the cops want to harass you then thats a great reason to pull you over. If you purchase a set of lights that are pre tinted then it could still be an issue if you get rearended. Basically the insurance company could tell you that you are on your own since you tampered with the safety equipment. That hasnt stopped me from tinting mine tho so do as you please and enjoy your ride.

After 15 seconds of googling, it turns out that tinted tail lights are illegal in NY if the tint obstructs visibility. That is to say, it's entirely up to the cop.

Could you go with led lights for more light through the lens?

Never gotten a ticket for them and havent been harassed at all, of course that could have something to do with my support law enforcement plates. I do have LED lights and I am planning on adding one of those truck bed lights for my 3rd brake light. It all boils down to "is it safe for other drivers" the main issue is if you can see the brake light in the direct sunlight, with the sun shining on your taillight. My avatar is my taillights at night so clearly visible, but during the day time it does cut the amount of light output considerably.

I know it may sound like Im voting against tinted lights, but really I just want you to know about what you are going to do to your rig and let you make an educated decision.
