Building an Automotive Performance Company

Does anyone have experience in this area? I want to do this for a living, and I have no idea what to do for it. I was thinking maybe a Mechanical Engineering Degree and a degree from UTI or some other tech school. Minor in buisness in college maybe. Please give me feedback, those of you I know are on this forum that engineer for the big companies and all that.

I guess my first question would be what kind of company? Your question is too broad based. What part of the performance industry do you find most interesting? Motors. Aerodynamics. Fuel systems, power transmission, suspension. If your thinking you want it all your going to need a lot of school and tons of from the ground up experience. The days of the Smokey Yunick self made man are slowly coming to an end. Big money means big talent. You need to find you niche and then become the very best you can be in that field. Become the go to guy to the magazines. Work for peanuts for big race teams and get your cred's. Then build your better mousetrap and learn to sell your self. Its going to be a lot of hard work to open a successful performance shop. But if thats what you want then go for it.

Mechanical Engineering would be a good start, UTI wouldn't do you very much good IMO.

Coming from a UTI graduate and current Mechanical Engineering student..
