Buying a jeep

I am new to the jeep world and I am getting ready to buy a jeep. I am wanting a 2 door and nothing new. I kind of want old school but a good DD while having the ability to turn to the dirt and rocks. I need some input on what year and kind is best. My budget is 4k-5k.

I also would like to know what I should look for when looking at a potential.

I personally have a yj.. bought it for 2400 or something and needed attention in a few places. Ran great though.. had a 2.5l 4 cyl engine and 90k miles on it. But with 4-5k id look for a solid stock tj. I know you can buy them for around that price usually in decent shape.

That price range can get you a decent YJ or TJ. I'm in the same boat and this is what i have been looking at. First thing is to check for rust underneath. All of them will probably have some rust but if it is more than surface rust, it's probably best to walk away. I'm looking for my second Jeep and I am looking for the best Jeep in my price range. I used to own a TJ but I'm leaning towards a YJ this time. The TJ was an awesome daily driver but I do want something that will give a more authentic experience. The YJ seems to have a lot of benefits from the old CJ7s along with some of the more modern TJ bonuses. After rust, my big thing is a six cylinder engine, and then after that is hopefully fuel injected which only came on later YJs. My budget is only $3500 so it's either going to take me forever to get what I want or I am going to have to compromise. Originally I was going for a CJ5 for a pure authentic Jeep experience but as this Jeep will be traveling 260 miles a week all interstate, it's just not practical. If you can find someone that has already done some mods, that can be a bonus. On the other hand, finding an unmolested Jeep means there is a better chance it hasn't been beaten to death. Good luck.

Keep after it! I got a completely unmodded 94 Sahara from a dry dry place for $3800 after waiting and looking for like 8 months. Guy was asking 5k on craigslist but i called and asked how bad he wanted to get rid of it which was pretty bad. Your jeep will find you!!

Yeah I am looking every hour it seems. Thanks for the information. I've been looking at a range from CJ7 to TJ. My friend a non lifted jeep will be better cause less chance of extreme off road use. I will keep you all posted what jeep finds me. I hope it's soon cause I got this itch now! Thanks 98sahara86!

I've been checking CL mobile about every twenty minutes. Last night there was a new listing that showed up for a '95 with a Six. It had a bad computer but the guy was only asking $1000. I called when the ad was 24 minutes old and got VM. Within thirty minutes the ad was gone.

Pretty sure it wasn't spam. It was a beat up, non-running YJ but figured at the price it was at I could fix it and still be ahead of the game. There's plenty of spam on Craigslist. 2011 JK's for $1400.
