Buying a used or salvage jeep

Looking to buy a new (to me) Wrangler asap, and I've run across a bunch with some rust. I've also come across at least one with a salvage title and obvious interior tub rust (I haven't checked out the rest of it in person yet).

My question is whether or not it's safe to buy a Jeep in this condition. If it doesn't look too bad, is getting it rhinolined (or similar) enough to keep it on the road, or is complete rot inevitable? If getting it lined is acceptable, where do I go for estimates in NJ, and how much will it cost?

Answers and opinions are welcome. Thanks for your input!

O.K., here's my thought. The fact that it's a "salvage title" is irrelevant here, isn’t it? The real question is “Will a bed liner product prevent/protect against any rust?”

If that’s the case, my perspective is that if there’s rot all the way through, you’re going to have to do some cutting and welding. If there’s places where you can’t put weight on the floor board, then you’re not going to be happy. The lining, whether rhino or another brand, is a coating not necessarily the material of construction.

If the steel is in good shape, after you scrape off any rot, then you'll be able to coat it.

Surface rust can be ground down to bare metal and prepped for paint or bedliner easily with a wire wheel and elbow grease.

Deep rust cannot be repaired. It has to be cut out and replaced. If the metal is blistered flakey and thin, needs to be surgically removed. Covering it will not help.

The difficult to repair places are body mounts, shock mounts, seat mounts, floor pans and pretty much anywhere in the frame itself. Beware fresh black paint on a frame and wheel wells. Usually a poor rust coverup for quick sale.
Poke around with a screwdriver feeling for soft rotten metal.

If you have to move the body off the frame to repair rust might as well keep looking and leave that can o worms to someone looking for a long term project.

Most any body shop can tell you in about 2 minutes if a rust problem is minor or major.
