Buying a used TJ.

Ok so heres the deal. I found a 2001 TJ for $13,000. It has 41,000 miles on it, 3 in suspension lift, 5 new 33/12.5 MT mud terrain tires, and is in pretty good condition. I have been looking for a reliable jeep because my xj is almost dead. Is this too much to spend on a 2001? there is no body rot, but underneath seems a little rusty (driveshaft, brakes, axles, ex.) All other jeeps I looked at were more expensive and even if they were a newer model, had more miles on them. Help me out please.

You don't mention engine or tranny. Last night I googled Jeeps for sale 2004-as that is the age of mine. I was curious as I saw a 2005 Rubi with 44k miles stock (except mudders) that the used car dealer was asking $20750. I thought the dealer was crazy!!!! but the prices are all over the place-if I were you would consider getting one from the "south" saw a lot of them for 12-17k that were several years newer. However all that being said, if you feel/believe the lift was done correctly and it has the I6, it sounds to be a good deal.

well the engine looked clean. it is a 4.0 Lt straight 6. My XJ has the same one with 220,000 miles on it. it is also a standard tranny. I live in MA so going down south to get one is out of the question. And yea, all the others were 15-18K that I looked at with way more miles.

If it's from a private party, pay to have the jeep checked out by a shop familiar with jeeps. It will be worth it in the long run. If the seller won't let you do it, walk away.

I ran a Kelly Blue book on it, a bone stock 4 cyl. 5 speed in excellent conditon, showed 10 grand private sale, and 13 grand retail from a dealer.

If it checks out, sounds like a pretty good deal.

Lower miles are not always better, especially when buying a older vehicle IMO. Means vehicle sat alot. Not saying that's the case but.... I would much prefer a 1st year rubicon (03) if you can find one for that price or probable a little more. I see a lot of wranglers with lifts and bigger tires. The price is jacked up like the jeep is the ultimate rock crawler. I always send them an email asking what gear ratio their running. Most of the time they are clueless as to what i am asking. My 01 has higher mileage and blue books for $9000 but I
would expect someone to pay around $6500-$7000. Just be careful and be patient

This is my new favorite website..... http://www.compnine.com/vid.php?vin punch in the VIN, get the build sheet immediately. No more ?'s for sellers who have no clue.

OP, he's trying to recoup for the lift, wheels and tires, IMO. See if you can talk him down some. He won't get more for them if he trades it in. I usually look em up on NADA, and shoot for somewhere between Trade in value and Retail value...
