Buying a used Wrangler

I want a fun first car so I researched for used cars and a wrangler seemed to fit my life style. In my research I discovered that Jeeps that are post 97 are better because they have a better suspension, but if I replaced the suspension on a Jeep that is pre 97 would it be worth the money, I just need help on buying a jeep my budget is only 5 grand also.

You are unlikely to find a post 97 jeep for 5 grand, at least one that is drivable without a salvage title around where I have lived (midwest, south, and now west, way way west).

Yes there are better suspensions, but plenty of people drive CJs and YJs as daily drivers (me included). I went from the newest generation (JK) to a YJ. Does the YJ have less safety features and have less technology than the TJ, JK, volvo? Absolutely. However, the trade off was better for my life situation (wanted to get rid of the loan, own the YJ outright).

Test drive CJs/YJs/TJs/JKs and see what features you want, and decide what its worth to you. If you have $5k, you could also put a down payment on a lease or buy even a JK with credit.

I bought a 1999 Sahara this summer for $3800. It ran and drove just fine buying day, the trans needs a rebuild but I drive it daily. It was bone stock its entire life, something you definitely need to look into!

I have put about $2k into it, doing all the maintenance you can think of and cleaning/replacing parts. So it is possible to get one for under $5k, but it's tough. Search for a while and test drive them.

We are on the same boat, bro. And now given my budget and DD situation, I'm giving serious thoughts to XJ, instead. But if you have a garage, there are many TJ, YJ deals in Mass that is around 5k something. Under 5k will be hard to find though.

i'd buy a stock 4.0 5 spd yj with under 100k miles this way you know it wasnt abused much. and if this is your first "car" ^ lol then anything you do to it like lift, exhaust, 8.8 rear end then you'll know how everything works and if it goes wrong you can fix it instead getting rid of an arm and a leg at a shop.
