Buying First Jeep: Rust Question

All,

I'm thinking of buying my first Jeep, its a 1993 Sahara. I noticed two rusted through holes in the sheet metal exterior right above both front wheel wells. I didnt notice much (visable) rust on the underside. Some rust shavings under the front seat carpet.

I'm going back to take another look at the car today, and was wondering where I could check for structural rust or other potential issues by just a visual check. Also, any other common issues with this model I should look for? Thanks guys, I look forward to joining the Jeep community.

Take something to crawl on, don't know where you are from but YJ's rust out mostly in the frame, rear, over the tires where the shocks mount and a cross member by the gas tank. I would pay a mechanic to get it up on a lift and really look it over. Some of us can handle a frame swap but judging by your question I don't think you are one of those, not dissing you, you have to start somewhere.
If you are from calif I would for sure take to a mechanic and have it completely checked over to make sure all the emission stuff is on and working otherwise you should have a couple grand in your pocket to get it fixed and it can cost that much or more.

If you really suspect there are rust issues, you might even want to take it to a body shop you trust and have them check it over. Spending a little time and money now can certainly save you a lot in the future. (^^^like he said^^^)

What IS it about buying "used?!" Dang!
I can FULLY understand buying a WWII model, and fixing her up...or buying one already "fixed" up...and I realize that some model years are kinda special, but dang.....

Hey, I bought all our 97's back in 2002 or 03, all were under $4K so for 16K I got 4 TJ's. I would have to look long and hard about forking over the bucks for a new one, I prefer someone else take that $5000 DOLLAR drop as soon as you drive off the lot... I also know 97 and 98 XJ's and TJ's inside and out which makes repairs easy.

Anyone can buy a new one or a "built" one. You get more satisfaction from buying one and making it YOURS.

also check for rust inside and out at rocker panels, windshield frame, and floor pan.

check for rust on the side front panels by the jeep logo, floor pans, windsheld fram ( where the glass is sealed). and for the frame make sure u check where the engine mounts are and where the frame comes up. ive noticed that those are the first to go.
