Buying My First Jeep!

Ok, so I got some scratch to get me a jeep and I have narrowed it down to a 97-2006 Wrangler Sahara 4.0 4x4 Manual in white/brown top.

So I am very picky at this point and I'm looking for an absolutely babied jeep that has low miles and not beat up.

I have found a few, but as you can imagine they sell fast and these were to far out of reach anyhow..

I'm sure I'll find one, just gonna take some time. I'm already looking at mods. It would be nice to find one with a lift, tires, etc, but I'm sure I can get it done locally here in south florida.

Any direction you can add would be awesome!

My current truck is a 2013 F150 ecoboost.

Looking to buy the jeep and hold it for a long time. Just hope it is soon, because the winter is awesome down here in fort lauderdale!

If you can find one with a factory dana 44 rear axle that would be good(factory LJ (unlimited) 2004-2006 has a factory dana 44 and 3.73 gears plus extra room in the back. If you like auto transmission the 2003 and newer have a 4 speed. Good luck with the search.

Makes sure that you get a Dana 44 rear differential, with the 4.0 engine.

Look them over very carefully for rust!

The 1997 through 1999 have some exhaust manifold cracking issues, but can be replaced.
The 2000 have some radiator issues, but can be replaced.

Stay away from the 2005 and 2006, because they have a serious oil pump engine failure, called the OPDA!

The best two years are the 2003 and 2004.........

I would look at craigslist, car gurus, and the truck trader on line...

The TJ has been out of production for 8 years so a lot of the so called Mall Crawlers, lifted Jeeps that never go off road are already on their second or third owner. If you want one that has a more likely not driven off road look for one that has not been lifted.

how do the newer ones compare to the 4.0? I found a really clean 2000 with 42k miles on it that I may grab this week.

I'm in s fla as well. I searched for more than 6 months for a 03-05 Rubicon and never was able to get the deal done fast enough. They sell fast and really good their value.

I ended up expanding my search to include more models and I warmed up to the jk. I ended up finding a one owner, low mile 2007 x freshly lifted with new 315/70 duratracs. Never off road and mint except for a ding in the cowl from unstrappped door swinging open.

I fell in love with her and paid the same as I would have for a Rubicon with over 100k miles.

Low miles are nice but you might expect to be replacing suspension components and cooling system on a vehicle that's 15 years old - something to consider.

I wish you luck! You'll see me in West Palm Beach waving to every Jeeper.
