If you have to pass emission testing its going to be next to impossible.

From my experience if you don't want it to sound nasty with a gutted cat, the best thing is to pull the cat off and cut it open then clean it out and cut a length of piping to fit inside it and weld it back up. This prevents it from sounding really bad from just a hollow cat and also allows you to still have it appear as if a cat is installed.

If its not required to have a cat, don't gut one out simply remove it and replace it with pipe.

it's federal law to have a functioning cat on a car that left the factory with one.
put a high flow cat on it if you have to do something with it. it will sound much better and good modern cats aren't much of a restriction at all. in a lot of cases, you can pass a visual inspection and often the sniffer test on modern fuel injected cars with a gutted cat.

You must have a cat if it came from the factory with one. Thats a federal requirement and I'm pretty sure the fine is quite steep if you remove it and just weld a pipe in its place. Gut it and leave it in place if thats what you want to do. If you are running stock exhaust I found that removing the rear track bar made it significantly easier to remove the muffler so you can get to the cat otherwise you have to remove the stock skid plate whos bolts can snap so be aware of that. Also if you are going to remove the cat I would pick up some exhaust clamps the 2.5inch ones i believe cuz your old ones are probably rusted through and prone to snapping.
