Caught topless in the rain

I picked up my JKU from the dealership just a few days ago and I've been itching to take the top off. Last night the temperature got down into the low 80s so I figured it would be perfect and took the freedom top off (couldn't find a flashlight to finish the job and take the rest of the hard top off...).

I get all the way to where I need to pick up my daughter from practice, absolutely loving the fresh air, I park and get out. That's when the thunder crackles and the rain starts coming down.

After my initial panic attack (I kept thinking of what would have happened to my BMW if it rained inside it), we hopped in the Jeep and drove home in the rain. When we stopped at a red light and got a little more rain inside, the only thing she could say was "I love this car"

When we got home I gave the seats and cup holders a quick toweling off and I have to admit, I wanted to go back out and drive around in the rain some more!

Can't wait to take the rest of the top off today or tomorrow.

I got a nice shower this way last month. Me, my wife, mother and father in the TJ, torrential downpour, had to press the water out of my eyes, everyone laughing hysterically the whole way home. Only in a Jeep!

I have been there several times, sometimes its pretty bad and I get soaked. At that point its not really fun but you get over it. It will continue to happen to me as I am not a fan of having a top on at all..

Glad you enjoy it. BTW, it's never a "car". It's a Jeep. God kills a kitten every time somebody refers to a Jeep as a car

Funny you should mention that. I said to her," you get one freebie, but the next time you call this jeep a car, I start posting on your Instagram account."

So realistically, how bad is it for the whole interior to be exposed to rain etc. I haven't had the balls to just leave my top off when rain is in the forecast.
So do you guys leave tops off for weeks straight with no worries of water damage or vandalism?
Still trying to get comfortable with the idea of taking the top off and staying that way regardless.

Got caught in downpours twice last week. Managed to get under a tree for one so it wasn't too bad. The second one was out in the open and had BIG drops. It was fine until I had to stop at every single stoplight home....and people were pointing and laughing. I had a blast!

I'm not worried about rain, but I don't fancy the feral cats peeing in my Jeep, so I can never leave the top off overnight. Irritating.

No worries at all. I haven't had anything damaged, yet, b/c of it... just some wet seats. Sure, water stands in the floorboard like it's a koi pond, but that's ok.

I haven't had my hardtop on since March. When summer rolls around, I usually take it off, put on the bikini top and let it roll like that for the summer. My Jeep isn't my only vehicle, so when I'm not driving it, or at night, it stays parked under my carport. I live in a safe area and not worried about people stealing it.

When it's topless, I try to avoid driving it to work on days it's suppose to rain, but not always. If it happens, it happens and sometimes, I welcome it. Down here in the south, it feels pretty good on a hot day when it starts raining and the doors/top is off the Jeep. As long as you're moving, you don't get very wet at all.

The biggest thing is w/ the bikini top, water fills up the top and one seat is GOING to get soaked when you start moving... the trick is, when you start moving, immediately turn left and all the water will fall into the passenger seat. I've forgotten and turned right, soaking my seat, a time or two as well though. :o

I always keep two contractor bags under the seat just in case theres rain, one for the drivers seat and one to cover up the dash.

I saw a guy a couple last week coming down from a trail here in Colorado with his top off...it was an epic down pour and actually pretty cold. As we were heading up my friends (new to jeeping) looked at me and said, "what an idiot." Which then I looked at them and said, "I'm so jealous.."

I wish I had the balls to run full rain...but I'm still waiting to be lose my V Card to the rain!

...and I can't wait!

In a convertible car, yea... I'd call them an idiot.

In a Jeep, it's as likely to be by choice than it is bad luck. haha

A lot of that depends on what you have in the Jeep. My whole tub is herculined and the stero is a boat stereo. Gage clusters may get a little foggy for a few days if you are caught in a really good thunderstorm. Carry a couple of contractor bags with you to cover the seats when you arent in it because a soggy bottom all the way home can be a bit uncomfortable. Be that as it may I have ran all of my Jeeps with just a bikini pretty much from April to November. Cool mornings I just throw my motorcycle jacket on and crank the heat Bottom line I just prefer riding in a naked Jeep.

On the JK, you really need to watch out for the steering wheel and column (clock spring). I would also guess that a touch screen nav system would not be found of a downpour.

I've been caught out in the rain, and for a few hours, the radio controls on the steering wheel didn't act right (until they dried out).
