Chasing Jeep History

I've been totally wrapped up in studying Jeep History lately, and had picked up yesterday, a book entitled, "The Story of Jeep" (2nd edition) published in 2004, in which, on page 67, the Author (Patrick R. Foster) states that Mr. John N. Willys died in "1935."

Then on a website, (http://auto.howstuffworks.com/1906-1939-jeep6.htm ) a caption appears under a photograph of Canaday there, that states that Mr. Willys died in 1925? Who's correct?

I googled John N. Willys and everything that came up about him said he died in 1935.
Now, excuse me. I'm going back to read more about him and jeeps.

Soupy, thanks for bringing this up, you've got me googling this morning.

My TJ "George" is named for George Ritter. It brought a smile to my face to find he had a hand in the conversion from war jeeps to civilian jeeps.

Let me know if there is much on Mr. Ritter in the book you are reading. I just may have to pick it up.

I'm about 1/3 of the way through the book, and I think I noted Mr. Ritters' name in there (about 98% sure).

I e-mailed a fella who is the head of a Design firm (name escapes me at the moment) whose dad was responsible for the designs for Jeeps post WW II. He was approached for his expertise and is also responsible for things like the "Miller High Life" Logo; some influence in Harley Davidson Motorcycle Design, and more.

When I'm home, if I can look up the guys name, I'll let ya know....

Thanks, I'd appreciate it.

He was an atty for John Willys and at one point purchased the company, I believe it was with Canaday for some ridiculous sum of money. Later sold the company to Kaiser-Fraser and did very well on that sale from what I've been told.

He and his wife lived in the Willys mansion and my husband's grandparents took care of Mr. & Mrs. Ritter up until their deaths. Ritters desire was to have the house used as a public gathering place per his will but I don't think that desire ever materialized and the house may well be gone now.

Ritters left many things to my husband's grandparents, some of which we now possess, including the purchase of my 'George'. I'm a bit facinated by George and Mary Ritter. The man left provisions for his dog in his will, sure sign of 'good people'.
