i'm from Santa Cruz, California and today i got rap#d by the law and was cited with a traffic violation and a fix-it ticket for not having enough coverage with my tube fenders and no mud flaps. The mud flap thing is easy but the fender flare part isnt easy I need to go back to the CHP office with my jeep fixed before they will sign off the ticket. I have poison spyder custom tube fenders with a 3" flare in the from and smittybilt tube fenders in the rear. does anyone know how to temporarily extend your tube flares so i can get it signed off? any tricks? i was thinking about using a wide piece of door weatherstripping and attaching it somehow to the fender. let me know!
now that's a complete BS ticket! What law man in their right mind would write that? Granted I'm from upstate NY and just about every HD pick-up truck around here has a lift kit and wide mud tires, but seriously?
Why be shocked? CA has had a fender coverage law for at least 40 years. We were writing these tickets in the 70's. Obviously did something that left him no recourse but to write the fix it ticket.:whistling:
ya im just wondering if anyone has ever had a similar problem with tube fenders? i honestly was shocked with the fender coverage but i knew about the mud flap law.
I got Pulled over In my Jeep For speeding the other day And I had asked about that Exact thing. I Asked the cop If it was a Law to have your fenders Covering your tires And he said.. Technically yes.. But he says I would never meet a cop that would be that big of a C**K To wright me a ticket for that... In iowa anyways! As far As your problem.. I'd say your idea is pretty spot on.. How much more fender Do you need?
Know anyone you can rent stock wheels from? Even someone on here might swap with you for a day. I know a lot of clubs around here keep stock tires for the members to use when they were getting inspected. NJs done away with safety inspections since though.

Seriously, Kalifornia cops/sheriffs/highway patrol are pretty nazi about every little thing. If you're worried about running into this problem again, and you probably will, then you'll either have to get larger tube fenders (expensive, I know) or mock up some urethane flares that can attach/detach easily for highway driving.
HOLY CRAP!! look i am a phoenix cop, and that is total bullcrap, what a c...k sucker. i have been a cop for almost 15yrs and couldnt even begin to tell you if there was a law for fenders or not!!! mud flaps yes. BUTTTTT in arizona mud flaps ONLY apply to TRUCKS....NOT SUV's or Jeeps. And just about every truck here is jacked with no flaps and i have never written that ticket. what a joke. California...need i say more! jk. Dont know how to help you on the fender thing but look into the mud flap thing and make sure it applies to jeeps. Sorry man, majority of cops were breast fed as children and wouldnt cite for something so dumb.
Stock tires/rims was the first thing to come to mind for me.
I hate to hear that for you, in South Louisiana it is a requirement to have a lifted big tired rig!
Pretty sure you can beat this--- somebody posted this useful link before.
Lift Laws | Suspension Lift Laws By State California, you have to have flares and mudflaps if vehicle came with mudflaps but it does not refer to total coverage. Look at the same sight but under Pennsylvania and you will see what I mean.
Yup, Cali sucks that way, I had to get teh cheapo 7" flares, and made some mud flaps, got my ticket signed, turned the mud flasp into floor mats, and the flares stay on, cops dont look at me anymore.
Thats BS if you ask me, but as everyone is saying, thats how cali is. i'd go with the using stock wheels right now for the inspection so you can figure something out for later
Sorry to hear about your luck man, I got pulled over in Santa Cruz when I was running 38's on my truck, I was told if it wasn't legal height they would impound it.... While his partner was grabbing the regulations book the cop that was talking to me looked in the bed of my truck and saw my surfboard, they ended up being surfers and let me go.... I wish I still had that kind of luck still, ended up getting pulled over in Vegas 5 years later and the highway patrol wrote me for everything on it, I sold it a couple weeks later
How much is the ticket for? If it is less than a buck-fifty or so, I'd just pay it and go on about my business. Yeah, you got selectively taxed, such is life. Not really worth the time to swap tires, take time off work, go to the PD, etc.

Someone in my neighborhood used standard Roofing Rubber to line the insides of their fenders and trimmed the rubber to cover the tire. He isn't running aftermarket fenders, just does it to keep the mud from flying all over his white Rubi.
wow thank you everyone for your advice and replies haha i never thought this post would create such a stir. so i'll tell you exactly what i did, i went to home depot and looked around for somekind of door weather stripping that i could attach to the tube fenders, i had two employees looking around for me too haha one of the guys found the PERFECT material, it was 4' x 4" x 1/8" of black vinyl flooring! the seriously looked like fender flares even before i put them on. i used duct tape and applied them as neatly as i could. Then i made your typical huge rubber mud flaps, which to be honest i dont even need cause my rear swing away tire bumper sits kinda low and the gas tank is low in the rear on jeeps. I went to the CHP office and i got signed off on the fix it ticket immediately, the officer even let me go after i forgot to put the front license plate on haha but i talked him into it. What i plan on doing about whether to keep them on or not...its pretty obvious what i'll do. NOT drive around looking like a clown!
Two citations, one civil and the other for equipment, is hardly rape. I think my record is 12 violations, one driver.
DUI
DUI .08+
DUI .20+
DRUG PARAPHERNALIA
SUSPENDED LICENSE
NO ID
EXP REGISTRATION
NO INSURANCE
M/I SUSPENDED PLATE
SPEED NOT R/P

Something like that. It took 3 sheets. 30 day vehicle impound. I gave her a ride home to the reservation. Probably has a dozen warrants now. That was my first year on patrol.
your a cop? so what would they do if they saw me without flaps again?
