CO Radios in Jeeps

I admit I was a child of the 80s (oh the horrors lol) and CB radios were all the rage. I was quite surprised to see folks on here still carrying them. Completely arsinine question I am sure but why? For off road where there may be no cell signal maybe? Or is it a "guy thing" and I am just not the right gender to understand (lol)? What do folks use them for? Be gentle!

Auto correct fail of course i mean CB radios

for when several jeeps are out together you can communicate with everybody....or at least everyone that has a CB.. also get traffic updates when stuck in traffic.. but mostly while riding with others on the trail

It's mostly for trail communication. It's easy to talk with everyone in your group when you have CBs. When you're on a trail where the lead can't see much past the Jeep behind him, it's great for the tail gunner to be able to let the lead know they've stopped for an obstacle.

I find it's also handy to be able to listen in on the truckers on the highway when there's a big traffic snarl or I'm driving in bad weather. Also, my CB has a weather radio so I can get weather updates as well.

PO had it installed in the Jeep, so I left it in....I figure eventually will be handy for trail communications....kind of looks cool too with the big red antenna behind the spare tire heh.

They are unbeatable on the trail. Talk to everyone at once. Using cell phones would be horrendous. Call the guy in front of ya because you got stuck. I don't know about you guys but where we wheel it's so far out in the boonies cell service is non existent to spotty at best. CB everyone's listening all the time and on the same page.

Just recently used mine to pass truckers on the highway. They were moving a house so needless to say they were wide. I couldn't see around them but I could ask them when it was safe to pass. No one else had that capability

It is a mandatory piece of equipment for our club. It make riding in a group on or of the trail very easy so you know what all the others are doing and they know what you are doing.
Hand held are more of a PIA you have to worry about dropping them when your on the trail when your driving, batteries going dead, The range on most of them stink, Ect.

I've had a CB for about 15 years but only used it once. The cab on the Wrangler is so f-ing tight that to mount one in there would be a nuisance. Don't mean to hijack, but anybody with pictures of their mounts?

Just keep in mind that roughly 20% of truckers have a pathological hatred for "little 4-wheelers", and are likely to wait 'till there's oncoming traffic before telling you to pass.

Also @all: Good Buddy doesn't mean what it sounds like...

I have a small uniden 510 in my jeep. I mounted it as close to the center console as I could under the glove box. I rarely talk on mine but I do turn it on to listen in. Also in my area I catch the skip on channel 26-29. I can't talk to them but it still amazes me that the ham operators can talk coast to coast. I have always been a cb dork

Not anymore anyways. I guess now if you use that term, your "good buddy" is very close to you!!

You are now required to have a CB if you participate in jeep jamborees. That is the only reason I have one in my rig.

I've seen some guys with easily removable CBs. I think as long as you are able to communicate with the other participants then you are fine. Its a new rule for 2014
