Considering purchasing a 2008 Wrangler X - What should I look out for?

My girlfriend is in love with Jeep Wranglers and we are going to look at an '08 on Friday that we may purchase.

Can somebody tell me what I should look for when seeing the vehicle? Any common problems with the '08 Wranglers?

The particular one we are looking at has 18,000 miles and is in perfect condition, sell for $20,000...is that a reasonable price? My research at Edmunds and KBB seems to indicate that it is but you guys probably know better.

Thanks in advance.

I paid $17k for my 07 with 15k on the odometer last winter...$20k sounds a bit high but which model is it...2 door or 4 door, standard/auto, X, Sahara, or Rubicon??

2008 X 2-door with a manual transmission

I would love to find something for $15k but I can't find anything close to that. When I do a search for 2008-2011 Wranglers (on eBay and other sites) with 2-doors and manual transmission with less than 36,000 miles, I can't find anything cheaper than the mid 19's...where did you find such a good deal on yours?

A Jeep dealer in Massachusetts. Made an offer and they took it! initially it was $18.5
Mine is an "X" also but it has the "S" package which gives it basically everything a Sahara has for options and it has a Dana 44 rear end with 4.10 gears. Auto trans too...I love it!

Don't do it! Go with the TJ or you'll regret it.

You can find really nice TJ's with low miles for $15k all day long. I got my '02 with 27K miles for $12,900. It's in brand new condition, etc.... Look around you'll find a great deal.

What would you consider to be the perks of a TJ vs. a JK?

Keep in mind this is for my girlfriend and although she is in love with Wranglers she won't be doing any upgrades and I doubt she will ever go offroading.

From my research and shopping I think the thing that swayed me the most was price. Even though a nice newer low mile TJ is gonna still bring in a hefty purchase price, I found it was still less than a comparable JK. Also the JK passenger seat is not flip/fold on the 2 door. This was a deciding factor also since I have a little boy. Last, just the reliability of the straight 6 was also a factor. I honestly would have preferred a new JK with a factory warranty, etc... But for the price the TJ was the way to go. Mine is stock, haven't been off road yet in the 2 months I've had it. Just put some new 31's on it and it gets me back and forth to work. Very fun to drive too.

It also doesn't take much searching on this forum to find a handful of threads about how unreliable those JK's are. They have the motor of a minivan. Battery issues, And from what I hear, hydrolocking can be a problem, even in rain or light wheeling. That's an expensive monkey to have on your shoulders right outta the gate. Those are just a few of the issues I've heard of. Not even mentioning the fact that I think they're just plain ugly compared to their predecessor. The interiors are too modernized for my blood, I don't think they will age very gracefully.

Don't listen to the JK bashers... they just can't afford Jeep's best, most rugged and dependable model yet! I like the more "mordernized" look of my 07...compared to the 06's I test drove there is NO COMPARISON in ride quality, quiet ride, the interior and exterior are bigger, wider, taller, and with the manual trans, there should be NO issues. (the auto has a heat related issue that rears it's head with inexperienced 4 wheel drivers)

Every 06 and earlier I drove was loud, bouncy, and less appealing as a daily driver to me. If that's what you like, go for an older one...but if you want all the qualities of the best off road vehicle and the nicest creature comforts...get a JK!
You and your girl won't be disappointed...

Mine isn't gutless at all...I'm always surprised when people say that the 3.8 has no balls...mine goes like a raped ape...maybe it's the 4.10 rear end...? I never drove another JK either...just mine.

I disagree, you and your girl will be disappointed with the JK. There are two to three new threads daily about problems with the JK. Real problems, not simple ones. Electronic issues (see possessed jeep thread), hyrdolock issues (search hydrolock). And I believe the reason the last person to post here thinks his 3.8 is powerful is the 4.10 gears. A 2.5 seems beefy with 4.10 gears, it doesn't mean that it is. Everyone says this pentastar is gonna be a godsend for the JK, I hope they're right bc it definitely needs a godsend. As with any vehicles that recently have undergone model changes, it takes a few years to work out the kinks. The TJ is a proven design, with a very reliable history, you just can't go wrong with a 5 spd TJ. I don't care if it's a 4.0 or 2.5, they're both rock solid motors. And i know you said you weren't that interested in upgrading your jeep, but if you go with the TJ, accessories have a tendency of being much cheaper.

TJs are easier to fit through tighter trails.
Not to mention that they're much cheaper to modify. And their motors are more reliable(from my experience).
IMHO, I like the TJs ride much better... But that's just me.
Do as you Wish with your purchase
