Question deciding between tj, and yj

I have owned a jeep grand Cherokee, and now i want to buy a jeep wrangler. I live in Missouri, and i have been keeping an eye on craigslist for a while now. I have yet to decide on which wrangler I'm going to get a YJ, or a TJ. one thing that is disconcerting to me is that the TJ although newer seams to go for around a grand less then the YJ. I was hoping for some advice as to not only should i chose a YJ, or TJ, but also the what to look out for so i don't get scammed.

I live near Kansas city missouri, and i wont be able to buy until i get my taxes back. I just believe in finding out as much as i can before i buy. I have seen multiple YJ's in my price rang, and a few TJ's, i'm nervous about the YJ's because they are newer, and cheaper. Maybe because i grew up driving late 80's, and early 90's vehicles i don't consider them old enough to be classics yet. lol

Keep reseaching...ya have the time. Learn the differences between the TJ, YJ and CJ and I think you have some confusion as to which is which.

"The YJ gave way to the TJ for the 1997 model year (note that there was no 1996 model year; the 1997 TJ was released in Spring 1996). This updated Wrangler featured a coil-spring suspension (based on that of the Jeep Grand Cherokee) for better ride and handling, and a return to the classic CJ's round headlamps. The engine is the same 4.0 L AMC 242 Straight-6 used in the Cherokee and Grand Cherokee. A 2.5 L AMC 150 Inline-4 motor was available on entry-level models until 2003 when the 2.4 L DOHC 4-cylinder engine previously used on the Chrysler PT Cruiser replaced it."

Tj has round headlights, started in 97, they replaced the yj that came out around 87. I may have some confusion about them but I've learned the basics. I'd appreciate any advice, even if it's why you would chose one over the other

I have a 87 YJ and love it, although they are alittle slow it doesnt bother me

I have a 93 YJ and I love it. Does everything I want it too and more. TJs are awesome rides too. The drivetrains are very similar between the two. It really comes down to coils (TJ)/leaf springs (YJ), TJs have airbags and updated interior, and the old square vs. round headlight deal. I'd say whichever one you go for, make it a 4.0!

With your budget of about 3000, I'd go for a decent 6 cylinder YJ like I did. I too was on the fence about a YJ and TJ when I shopped for mine. I couldnt find a good enough deal on a 6 cylinder TJ so I went with the YJ. Haven't regretted a thing since.

Whichever you go with, you'll be happy! Good luck!

Psycho,
When I bought my Jeep I asked my bro in law who has owned many and works on them (he is a mechanic)..You will prob have a tough time finding a TJ within your budget, it can be done, just more difficult.
His suggestions to me would be the same I would give to you.

The a/c on a TJ is much better than the YJ. It may not be a huge issue in Mo but in Dallas, believe me its an issue. Also, get a 6 cyl if you can. You will enjoy the addl HP over the 4 cyl. Lastly, if you can get it, get the full doors, they just seal better. This is for rain, cold, wind noise, etc.

Otherwise, go to town.. and best of luck..

I agree with the above stated lol I have half doors and lobe them but would much rather have full doors

I have a 4.0 94 YJ and love it. I would say part of what made the choice for me was that I am fairly novice at doing any automotive work and the YJ is fairly simple to work on both physically and electronically. I really love mine and when I broke my trac-bar and could keep going on my leaf springs it really helped. Good luck with your decision!!!

i have to chime in aswell,,--i always wanted a tj but my wife snuck out and bought me a yj for my b/day,,-and i love it and it only has the 2.5 5 speed , it is slow but man it will crawl up and over anything in its way,, i have the soft top with half doors and it does get chilly and a bit noisy--but again im happy with it..

back to your choices,,,i think you will find a better jeep in the yj department on your budget...., your doing the rite thing buy gathering all the info you can on the 2 choices and keep watching cl for prices,--

best of luck and post up pics of your choices before you buy, alot of folks on here will be very helpfull on decideing facktors of the ones you pick..

Love my YJ but if you plan on having a more comfortable ride offroad and highway the TJ with the coil suspension is the one. It is extremely difficult to fond a YJ that has not been butchered by POs and is rust free. There are aftermarket parts all over for both and any combination of mods to make it your own but the TJ and newer with the coils are smooth. I will probably have my YJ until I die and I love working on it and driving it.

all comes down to coils vs leafs IMO i love my TJ but i would also love a YJ

If you can find a running 4.0 TJ for $3K that does not have frame or body rot, then snag it. But honestly, for about $3K you are going to be in a early YJ unless you find an unusual deal.

I agree with this. I bought my 97 Tj about 6or 7 months ago. 97,000 miles no frame rot or at least minimal .Total undercarriage was already coated. I knew I wanted a TJ and only really wanted to spend around 5 or 6k but after noticing all the high miles ( 6k was around 130k 150k miles) I decided to fork up the extra grand and bought my jeep for 7k. Best thing I ever did.Only issue with owning a jeep is you will always own one and never think twice about spending money on it!

I paid $2150 for a 95 YJ with 97k miles on it. No rust, and it had a 3" body lift with new 31's on it. The transmission was missing 5th gear since it was an AX5, but I upgraded to an AX15 for about $600 worth of parts including the transmission. I am sure if you are patient you will find a good deal too. The YJ is the obvious choice if you are on a budget. Not just for acquisition cost, but because parts cost less and are easier to work on. Coils are a little more work and money. With a YJ you can do a Spring over Conversion and never need to lift it again, and it will retain stock ride quality. Coils are comfy, but a PIA in comparison. You will save thousands going with a YJ if you plan on building it up. As far as performance, I havent found anyone with a TJ willing to do what I do to my YJ yet. I love my YJ though and will never get rid of it. The black one is the day I brought it home.

I heard you can flip the leaf springs on a yj for a cheap 4" lift....not sure if that helps or if it can really be done (I have never owned a yj just two tj's) but thought it might help with your decision.

i personally found the yj hard to work on (4 cyl that is) we had to change the clutch slave cyl and while in there the clutch itself and wow what a pain it the rear that was. changed many clutches on chevys and never had such a time with it. and who decided it was a good idea to put the slave inside the bellhousing anyway. lol

yes you can do that, very easy to do, gives you approximately 5.5" of a lift. But it is far from cheap of done right, I have done one on mine and have spent about $700-$800 already, with that being said it is well worth it, keeps ride quality awesome and is great experience, It is easy though, im 17 and did it with a few friends

They switched it to outside the bellhouse in 92. When anyone does a clutch job on an older model they usually swap it to an external. I know when I got my AX15 it was setup for internal so I swapped it. Only costs about $100 and adds 45min to the job. Other than that the clutch job is a peice of cake.

Thanks for all the advice. I think I want to try to get a TJ. Though I'll probably have to get one with high milage, I'm ok with that. I figure a jeep can go forever if properly maintained. And I can always swap engines later. Lol

If this helps at all my bother in law works at a Chrysler dealer and said rebuilding the motor is a little less expensive because it's an inline 6. Watch out for rust...check upper control arms and all mounts. Mine was undercoated when it was new so it made my decision to get it a lot easier. I live in Michigan though so rust is a huge problem here.

If your thinking of swapping a 2.5 to a 4.0 later, it's not an easy swap. You'd be better off going to an 8 cylinder.

I plan on starting at a 4.0 I ment if I blew an engine or if I found one with an engine on the way to the grave, I won't mind if I pick up the jeep at agood enough price. And an 8 cylinder's always an option
