Diesel Conversion?

Can this be done? What are the pro's and con's. I have seen the video of a Jeep with a cummings I have also heard that you can use a perkins Diesel as well. Has anyone here done one?

It can be done, lot of work, time and a lot of money need to go into it but it is possible, the engine bay on a jeep is so big you can fit almost anything you want in there and i have heard of people doing it but i am content with what i have... its not worth all the work to me, you would prolly have to make a lot of your own parts to make it all fit too but its possible

This can be done ive seen quite a few that use a 4bt which is a 3.9l cummins its a turbo 4 cylinder diesel i know that theres adapter plates that let you mate the engine to a 700r4 transmission and adapter plates to mate a np231 transfercase to a 700r4. These motors generally come out of boxe trucks like the fritolay truck or something like that and they are pricey i saw one for 1500 with 87,500 miles on it.

I have a friend who has a liberty with a diesel engine in it, its a few years old now so I am sure one could fine one in a wrecking yard at this point. would this be a do-able swap?

it is an insane amount of work and money to do it. go over to the American Expedition Vehicles forum and they have a thread all about the possibility of it. Dave, one of the big wigs for AEV has done it, and he has talked about some of the things he had to do.

what about the weight? I know a 4BT weighs about 750. Just curious what does the 4.0 weigh? I seem to think a diesel jeep would be extremely nose heavy.

the 4.0 is some where in the neighborhood of about 500 i think.

Oh well maybe you wouldn't be able to tell the difference. Especially with all the added torque and fuel savings.

Your Jeep inline 6 4.0 should have comparable torque to a 4 cylinder tubro diesel. Except you dont get the nice turbo boost.

$1500. That is actually pretty cheap. I would give that for it. If you can find the whole truck you are better off. You would have the engine and transmission. And the trucks used hydraulic motor mounts to ease the vibration of the engine. Let it be known that the 4bt's vibrate. Plus the trucks are made of aluminum. You could sell it for scrap and recoup some of the money spent. But is still a lot of work and not for a novice.

3.9 Cummins

I have been looking around for a 3.9 cummins and have not found anything under 3k. In the next couple of weeks I am going to try and research the issue completely and get a parts list together. When the four banger in mine goes I am going to use the opportunity to put in the cummins. I heard one on a trail one time and it was nasty awesome. If I find one for cheap it may happen sooner. My tool box has an itchy wrench drawer.
