Do It Yourself Ring and Pinion...

Has anyone here done their own ring and pinion swap. I've got some crazy high ratio of 3.21 on my new JK and I'm pretty sure the clutch won't enjoy the set of 35s I've got my eye on. I'd like to swap to 4.88s but there really aren't any shops nearby that do a lot of this kind of work. I'm an engineer and a fairly competent machinist, but I've never done a gearing change before. It seems to me like it should be a fairly straight-forward process...maybe a little trial and error to get things shimmed just right...but I'm still a bit nervous about jumping in. Any horror stories out there? Any success stories?

There are some great write ups online. If you take your time you can do it. Measure and measure and make sure you have a very good pattern. A shop press 20 ton is ideal too and a a bearing puller kit.

If you haven't gotten more out of the insurance company than you deserve, then you haven't screwed them nearly as much as they have been screwing you for the past xx years.

don't tackle it on your own. i've been doing them for quite a while, i have spent a few thousand in special tools just for gear installs. most mechanics i've worked with don't even have the ability to do them right, and like 4jeepn said, when they fail it costs you a lot of money.

oh yeah, josh speakin of gears, i sent ya a pm.

Agreed. The $$ it cost for the press, torque wrenches, etc and the sheer amount of time and cussing at the project when you have to tear it apart 20 times to get it just right is not worth it.

Better to find a respectable 4x4 shop and have them do it for ya.
