Drip rails coming unsewed -- Anyone got a fix?

Yeah, this is becoming a problem.

I'm up for suggestions if anyone has tackled this same problem.

I don't know what to use in order to pierce the plastic.





I know it's about time for a new roof, but DAMN they're expensive!!

I've got the same problem with a YJ top except its the windshield rail. Please post a fix if you find one.

A top shop should be able to re-sew that.... Had it done with my old 87 and thay had no problems with the hard plastics. I recall it being less than $100, but that was about 1991.

Yeah, I called a shop. They want $150 and said they need the Jeep all day cause they'd have to completely take off the top.

Any upholstery shop should be able to tackle that problem. $150 sounds steep... Should be less than an hour job with next to no materials needed. $40 tops..

I used a screw and one of those u-shaped lock nuts-(the kind you bend over somthing then screw it together as the screw tightens it press the metal prongs together. I then used some crazy glue to harden the rest of the threads, and burnt off the loose ends. Been holding since i bought the jeep.

I just had to fix the exact same problem on mine. All I did was to find an outdoor rated heavy duty thread and double it over, then used a strong curved needle and a pair of needle-nosed pliers to go through the existing holes in the plastic. It took a little while, but it was cheap, still looks stock, and if youre tall enough you dont have to remove the top to do it. Ill try to get pics up if it ever stops raining.

OH!

threads as in cloth thread.....

I thought you were putting crazy glue on the thread of the screw. Couldn't figure out why you'd do that.

If you can't find a convertible top shop to do the work, try a boat canvas store, depending on how busy they are, they might welcome the work! That's who I had replace my rear window zipper, quick & cheap!
